I have 7 and 9 year olds and I'm thinking of getting the family membership for $95 since it gives unlimited access. Going over the website it looks like there's lot of things to see, specially various planetarium shows. So I'm thinking we might be able to do multiple trips. Its 45 min drive for us.

Would like to hear what LI'ders think of the planetarium?

I think one trip is enough unless you have an inordinate interest in astronomy, given how far away you are.

Went there every year as a kid on a field trip. Went back about 10 years ago and the show was fine, facility a little run down. Setting is beautiful.

Haven't been to the planetarium but the Mansion tour is really interesting, especially if you see the living history tour where the guides take on the roles of historic figures.

I also live about 45 minutes away and went in the winter. I would go back on a nice day to explore the grounds and do a picnic but other than that I don’t think there is much to do more than that. We got free passes from our library.
I would read fine print about shows and limitations.

The Vanderbilt is one of my favorite places on Long Island. Even if I don’t hit the planetarium I love to just walk the grounds.

do they still do laser floyd shows? I feel like making the trek up to the planetarium to hear/see DSOTM was a rite of passage for many teens on LI....

Saw that on acid at the Hayden Planetarium and had to be scraped off the seat.
