Just as an aside, if either of you are opera/music buffs, then the Met for opera is a must (each seat has a translator); and Lincoln Center will have plenty of concerts in October, as well as Carnegie Hall. Nothing like spending an evening in NYC at a concert - check their schedules and see what you find. Tickets need to be ordered well in advance, so if you know the dates you'll be in NYC, take a look to see what's available. Also if you're into jazz, try the Blue Note, Birdland, Iridium, etc., and check out their schedules and see who's playing.
My husband and I like to have something to do in the evening in foreign cities that doesn't involve nightclubs, bars, etc. When we were in London last year we went to a concert at the venerable St. Martin in the Fields. It was quite a treat.
