We are 2 Californian's in our mid 60's that will be driving all over the U.S. visiting family and friends. (This could be our last hurrah to do so)
We have never been to NYC and want to visit there for a couple days early October 2018 and see the sites. I am looking for a Hotel/Motel that has parking and is safe that is fairly close to THE CITY. We don't mind using Public Transportation, I imagine us using Public Transportation during Non-Commute times. (Say 10am-10pm ish)
Put this in Manhattan / NYC forum, you will have better responses. The closest hotel I can think off of the bat on LI is in RVC (or Lynbrook, not sure, it's on the border), I think it's a Holiday Inn. You could jump on the LIRR from there. You don't want to park in Manhattan. It's expensive and I don't know that any hotels actually have their own lots. From RVC/Lynbrook, the train is about a 30 min ride into the city.

It's a Hampton Inn; tough to find but a good location because you can walk to the train.
The other option is the NJ side and take the bus or train in.
There is a Best Western in front of the railroad station in Rockville Centre and a Hampton Inn within two or three blocks. Both are listed as three star. Great area for walking to restaurants. You could stay there a week and probably never get back in the car. Many trains from RVC to Manhattan are nonstop and take just over a half hour.
Having said that, unless you have something else to see on Long Island you can find a New Jersey location that would probably offer the same.
Just tough it out and stay in the city. It will be about $50-60/day for parking but you wont have the hassle of coming in there every day and you can eliminate the commuting cost to get in and back each day. Or, find a lot in NJ to dump the car for the entire time you are here and then get it when you leave.
Stay in NJ, take a car service and use NY Fun Tours - they will even arrange pick up service. It's worth the $300-$500. The driver takes you to the top sights and you get to relax. To drive NYC is not worth the BS you have to put up with.
You're better off finding a hotel in Queens that is close to the subway and has parking. That way you can get into and out of Manhattan via subway/uber, plus there's plenty to do in Western Queens. And North Brooklyn is also close by uber.
I suggest looking for a hotel in Astoria or Long Island city. Hotel and parking cost is reasonable and you can take the subway there easily.
Best suggestion in this thread, I was thinking the same thing. I see no point in staying on Long Island unless the OP has family here or something.
