I suspect it is mainly a LI and boroughs thing due to the age of the housing stock (a lot of younger areas have big apartment complexes; housing like this was not in style here when our area was first built up; single family home was KING) and due to the geography (there is more room to build OUT indefinitely in middle America as opposed to being on an island like Nassau, Suffolk, BK, QNS, SI are).
