Are YMCA's not popular on LI?
My relocation agent told me yesterday she didn't know of any Y's left on the island.
I looked online and found that there are some. The one that would be serving our possible neighborhood is Brookhaven Roe, but I looked it up online and it seems to be quite small. Their newly expanded fitness room has only 4 treadmills!
I'm coming from a suburb in Cincinnati where the Y is sort of the hub of the community for families. They have multiple pools; a small water park; a sauna and hot tub; childcare; dance, swimming, yoga and other fitness classes, and multiple summer camps for kids of different ages. The fitness center there must have at least 20 treadmills.
I know it's probably due to the low cost of land back home, but can someone tell me if Y's here are doable? I hate to think of finding a separate gym AND a place for dance for my daughter AND a place to swim AND a summer camp when I had all of them in one convenient location before - not to mention the expense!
Just a link to show you what I mean:

We moved here in June and I was someone surprised by the lack of Y's as well - maybe someone who has lived here longer has more input. We joined the Huntington Y - fairly convenient since we live in East Northport - and it is large and pretty active.

Here's the site for YMCA of LI.
YMCA of Long Island
Just for comparison, here's the list of Y's in our area down here in Richmond and my family uses the place almost daily. I'd guess land would be one reason for lack of Y's on LI but I am surprised that they never took off more back when there was land available.

There is a very popular one in Bayshore. I know a lot of people who go there for many different activities.

I'm glad Bayshore has a popular one, so much potential there. I was also glad that they took over the old porn palace and fixed it up.

We do have a few large Y's here - three I know of -- Bay Shore, Commack and Huntington. All have large pools, well stocked gyms and many family oriented classes . The Huntington Y is a cultural center with a theater and a summer camp (not sure of the others). Sadly none are too close to you.
I also heard (radio advertisement) that Suffolk Community College (Brentwood Campus) has a large gym and pool and the price was quite reasonable. There is a SCC Campus in Riverhead - that might be worth checking out. Good luck.

....and , there are lots of really nice restaurants , flowery lampposts and they have put the canal closer to the town. They have a wonderful street fair in late May. I have spoken with Rick Lazio there a few times because he and I have a daughter with the same name. Actually , he met my daughter while his wife was pregnant and they used her name which I thought was kind of neat. (He is the one who ran against Hillary when she promised NOT to vote for the war). A very nice man.

The Bay Shore YMCA is really nice.
My daughter took swimming lessons there last year and also attended their summer camp. It was a wonderful experience for her and everyone there was great.
