One year rental near Stony Brook Univ?
Hello,
We (Spanish couple+1 baby) are visiting next year Stony Brook University (PostDoc). The only rentals that I've found are above $2000, which is much more than we can afford. I've also seen some cheaper ones, but without pictures or any deeper information.
Do you have any hints for us?
Which areas should be good but not too expensive?
Do you think it will be possible solve everything before travelling? (I would not like to arrive there with the baby and spend weeks at some hotel while trying to find a house!)
Thanks a lot for helping with any of the questions!

I would try Stony Brook, East Setauket, Setauket, South Setauket, Lake Grove, Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station. All the areas are reasonably close to the university, the first 3 being the closest.
Do you know anyone at the University from your home country, or could you contact someone within the department you will be working/studying who can give you a more university centered answer? While it would be best to get things set up before you arrive, you don't want to find you're less than thrilled with your choice. My neighbor relocated here in Stony Brook from Germany and bought her home without visiting it. She was happy, but there were things she would have liked that she didn't get because she didn't see it.
I did a quick search on MLSLI.com – Long Island Real Estate – Find A Home in Nassau, Suffolk & Queens and found:
2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage in Lake Grove for $1,195. Utilities are not included. mls#2025350
An apartment in a house: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath in Setauket. Utilities not included. $1,150.00 mls#2059790
A 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage rental in Lake Grove, utilities not included, rent negotiable $1,250-1,275 mls #2047664

I am a graduate of stony brook university (2004) during my senior year a few of my friends rented a house in Rocky Point (about 20 minutes from the University). I'm not exactly sure what they paid, but I don't think it was all that much, so you might want to check out the Rocky Point area.

That's a great idea; I sort of let it slide as I didn't know whether the OP was going to have immediate access to a car. The OP stated they were Spanish and traveling, I figured that they might possibly be coming here from Europe as many people I have met (grad students as well as profs) have come here by way of Europe.

Thanks for the orientation!
We will have to buy a car as soon as we get there... which, by the way, is also an interesting question: Where can we find a reliable vendor for the car?

Not knowing what you're looking to buy (new or used) I can tell you that I purchased a used Jeep from Port Jeff Chrysler Jeep and they've treated me very well through the purchase and whenever I've needed service. I would certainly go back there.
