Best area in Greenport (Riverhead, Southold: crime, home, neighborhood)

Hello, I am looking for info about the Greenport community. We are thinking about buying a small cottage/second home there. Any reason why the taxes appear to be much lower than other towns in this area? Thanks

Greenport's downtown (approx. 1/2 mile of little shops and restaurants, plus they have a carousel that gets a lot of play) is the big tourist draw, but in my opinion a decent amount of Greenport is fairly run down. Crime is an issue there more than any other hamlet on the North Fork (unless you consider Riverhead part of the North Fork).

With that said, there are still some decent areas in Greenport. Just have to check out the neighborhood and see if it's family-friendly, or if it's the aforementioned run-down sections.

For the money, I'd probably aim more for Peconic, Southold, Cutchogue or Mattituck.

Greenport is a village (incorporated in 1838) in the east part of the Town of Southold, in the northeast part of Suffolk County.

I agree, Southold or Mattituck are nice but will cost 2x as much.

Well if you are thinking of Greenport - East Marion is close by and can be affordable. Just stay off the main road the ferry traffic can be killer.

i agree mattituck,east marion nice but if you want greenport stay closer to sound ave and further from route 25(middle country rd.)

There's a little Greek restaurant type place off the road in Greenport that I've been to once that is absolutely FAN-TAS-TIC. You can sit outside in good weather on the "deck" which is sort of up on a little hill off the main road there that passes by. OUT-STANDING food.
