Can anyone suggest a great preschool in/around Port Jefferson?
We know that Pre-K is provided from the district; however, we would like to enroll our little one in nursery...any ideas? Pros and cons, prices, playgrounds, toilet training a requirement, etc would be much appreciated!

For those who may not be familiar with Port Jefferson
For those who may not be familiar with Port Jefferson:
Port Jefferson is a village (incorporated in 1963) in the northwest part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north-central part of Suffolk County
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Port Jefferson in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Village of Poquott, Port Jefferson Harbor, the Village of Belle Terre and Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Miller Place and the Hamlet of Mount Sinai; on the south by the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket.
The Village of Port Jefferson has a different border than does the "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" mailing address and not be in the Village of Port Jefferson and a place can have other than a "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" mailing address and be in the Village of Port Jefferson): places that have a "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" mailing address that are not in the Village of Port Jefferson are in the Village of Belle Terre; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Port Jefferson with a "Mount Sinai, NY 11766" and a "Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I wish I could remember the name of the one on main street. It's in a brick building downtown and I've heard wonderful things about it. I sent my kids to Setauket Playschool. It's also on 25A heading towards Setauket in a white church at the corner intersection just past Marios on your right. My kids loved it and it was a co-op at that time. Two year olds could be in diapers but the 3 and 4 year olds had to be potty trained. I liked it because as a co-op I could go in once a month and see how everything was going. I lived in Port Jefferson and made friends from both towns as well as Stony Brook. Best of luck!

Play Groups School on Old Post Road in Setauket (across from the old farm house, west of the LIPA lines) was very popular with some of my friends. By the time I learned about it, there was no space left for my child I know one of the teachers through my son and she is a very kind and loving person.

Good luck with your search!

without a doubt, miss kathy's preschool (roads to learning) is the best in the area. the school districts recommend her and so do i. although there is no yard as yet, the facility is quite large, state of the art, yet comfortable and homey to the children. the student-to-teacher ratio is the best around and miss kathy herself is quite a gem. every child that comes out of her school excels in grammer school. her prices are competitive - not the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive. she doesn't operate a "factory" like kiddie academy or the new "learning experience" (a chain) where preschool kids are attending the same facility as day care kids. kathy's facility is not a store front nor on a main thoroughfare - something that was quite important to my wife and me.
when i drop off my child, i know he'll be safe. when i pick him back up again i know he'll have received excellent instruction and have lots of fun. i recommend this school very highly. you should see it for yourself.

I'm just bumping this up since I'm looking for recs. also. I'm looking for a program for a 2.5 year old (she will start in the fall). I hear now is the time to register! Does Miss Kathy's start that young?

My son went to Harbor Hill Pre-School in a brick building in Port Jeff Village. It was wonderful, but that was about 33 years ago so I am not sure if it's still there.

we just attended kathy's graduation ceremony last week. first class!! the children displayed some of the knowledge they were fortunate enough to receive throughout the year. i couldn't be happier knowing my son is so prepared for kindergarten and the years ahead. we had the opportunity to attend the district's universal pre-k but chose to send my son to miss kathy's. great move. the universal kids did little more than just play in overcrowded classrooms. my son not only had a wonderful time but also learned that learning can be a fun experience. i recommend this school to any parent who truly cares about their child's preparation for elementary school.
