For those who may not be familiar with Coram:

Coram is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Coram in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Terryville, the Hamlet of Mount Sinai and the Hamlet of Miller Place; on the east by the Hamlet of Middle Island and the Hamlet of Gordon Heights; on the south by the Hamlet of Medford; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Farmingville, the Hamlet of Selden and the Hamlet of Terryville.

The Hamlet of Coram has a different border than does the "Coram, NY 11727" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Coram, NY 11727" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Coram and a place can have other than a "Coram, NY 11727" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Coram): places that have a "Coram, NY 11727" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Coram are in the Hamlet of Middle Island, the Hamlet of Gordon Heights, the Hamlet of Medford and the Hamlet of Selden; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Coram with a "Selden, NY 11784", "Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776" and "Middle Island, NY 11953" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

The "W" section is a nice section of Coram. I think most of those houses were built without basements though. Dont know if that matters to you or not. In my opinion Longwood school district, which most of Coram attends is not the best. A few co-workers live there and say that there are quite a few of fights that go on there. I guess everyone has their own likes and wants. Good luck on your house hunting!

The W section is probably the better section of Coram. Longwood ; again, isnt the best. But if you are involved, a good parent it can be ok.

There is also the option of doing what we did ; buy in Longwood and send the children to Catholic school

the house we like is listed with partial basement, and it is a really nice ranch. i have driven through the area a few times, and the people i see outside their houses seem fine. i guess the key would be to go at night and see what kind of stuff goes on! my husband is a police officer, so he could probably get info from the local precinct

Longwood was a bad school when I was in school (1990) and it still terrible. Test scores are really bad and the school has a reputation of being very "rough". I know from growing up on LI in that area (Port Jeff), I would NEVER send my kids to those schools. I'm sure the home is lovely, but when you purchase a home on LI you are buying the schools.

i do know that longwood isn't that great. we don't have any kids right now and live in longwood schools already. that is one of the things that bothers me also. i know as nice as the house is, i just wasn't sure of the neighborhood.

Default W-Section

I actually live 2 blocks away from wintergreen (on blair). The neighborhood is beautiful and the local businesses are great. The biggest shopping center (pine) was redone about 2 years ago with a new dunkin donuts/baskin robbins franchise, new bank(bank of smithtown),movie theatre-new seats,etc...

Longwood is better than it used to be but still not the best. What you need to find out is if it is definitely Longwood. Within the W section there are 3 different school zones.Longwood which covers most of the W section, then Middle Country and Comsewogue which also covers a portion of the W Section. Middle country is probably the best of the 3 and if you go north a block or 2 off wedgewood which is the main road that runs through the section thats where the 2 other schools come into play.

Good luck,
Lance

Probably too late now. However, 90 % of the W-section in Coram is the Middle Country School district not Longwood. The other 10% is Comsequoge School district. Middle Country fairs better than both districts. This is a fact.

ACTUALLY this is not true!!!! I work for the Coram Post office and can tell you precisely.About 70 %-Longwood, 25%-Middle Country, and about 5% Comsewogue. There are two postal routes that cover this area so we constantly see the school mailers for the area. Closer to Old Town is middle country and the rest of middle country stops are close to locust ave and cedar (north west corner of w section). Around westbrook area is comsewogue.
