Can anyone recommend a vet who does PU surgery on cats on Long Island. Can you also provide the cost/estimate. My cat is going through blocked urinary tract and the vet recommends I get PU done. She says her colleague charges around $2500-$3000. Could be more if he needs more attention.

This is his 2nd blockage and probably spent around $3000 (total for 2 catheters). First one was when he was 3 years old. He's now 8 with the 2nd blockage. Vet says it could get blocked again less than a month.

I've been thinking of putting the cat down since I don't want him to suffer.
According to this study, I don't like the outcome of the PU study although 88% of the owners said it was worth it.

Try Sunrise Vet, in West Islip on Sunrise Highway. NOT the 24/7 animal hospital.
I was referred by BBC on here & extremely happy with! I don’t know about the specific surgery you need.

Hi, My boy had/has this same problem a few years ago. After 3 blockages, our Vet recommended us to VMCLI in West Islip for surgery. We never went for a consult but vet said it would be around $4,000. We also thought about putting him down due to the recovery rate statics, $$ and his age.

Did some research and I put him on a prescription canned wet food with 1 Tablespoon of water added (no dry food at all - it was killing him). We also made sure he had tons of fresh water, a very clean litterbox and as little stress as possible. Yes - the vet said that stress can cause urinary problems in cats. We are lucky, so far, with no reoccurrences, fingers crossed.

Also I have heard good things about Dr. Wen, of Speonk, who practices holistic veterinary medicine.

You have to do what is best for you and your kitty. I wish you the best!

We have been through this 3 times on 3 different cats, 2 of them we caught early and the antibiotics did the trick only one had to be rotor-rooter'd to clear the blockage but none of them every had this more than once. Our current cat just went through this and we have migrated him to Hills Science Diet for urinary health that should stop the occurrences. All our cats have been indoor/outdoor and the vet said that's why we always go through this. No vet has ever recommended the surgery you mentioned is it something new? Have you tried the special food?

I went with the surgery which is today. He's healthy enough not to be put down.

I saw what was blocking his tract which was mostly mucus. 1st time when he was blocked was also mucus. The previous day before he was blocked, I fed him fish. I think fish causes the mucus. After the blockage was clear, grit/crystals came out. Vet still recommended the surgery. He could live another 8 years or more without blockage.

I have tried the special food but it was like $40 for 16 lbs which wasn't good with my budget so I went with Purina One UTI. It was fine for a while until I fed him fish. I was also feeding them wet food with a lot of water.

I'm going to feed the cats all wet food, meat only from now on.

The PU surgery is not a rare procedure. The vet usually recommends the surgery on the 3rd blockage.
