Default Sound Beach vs. Middle Island

Hi everyone

So my husband and I are looking to rent a house, and have found two decent ones in Sound Beach and Middle Island. As far as the houses themselves go, they are both equally what we're looking for. Location-wise, both towns are fine for hubby's commute. My main concerns are for my kids: which town is preferred in terms of the quality of elementary schools, town soccer leagues, libraries, etc?

Any advice or opinion is welcome! It's funny that although my husband and I both grew up on LI for our entire lives, there are still so many towns we've never heard of until our rental search... :P

Thanks, Kb, any specifics in opting for Sound Beach? We can't get a bead on whether Middle Island is decent or not... we don't know enough about it...?

Go with Sound Beach. Middle Island is Longwood school district and near Gordon Heights.

Some parts are ok, but some are defiantely not.

We checked out the house in Middle Island, but I've heard enough iffy things about Longwood schools to be moving more toward Sound Beach (M.P. schools). Like any town, I've heard that Sound Beach has "good" and "bad" parts of town- any advice on areas to avoid? I read mention on another thread about an area of it devoted primarily to section 8/ sex offender housing, which I'd like to avoid.

For those who may not be familiar with Sound Beach:

Sound Beach is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north-center part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north-central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Sound Beach in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Rocky Point; on the south by the Hamlet of Rocky Point and the Hamlet of Miller Place; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Miller Place.

The Hamlet of Sound Beach has a different border than does the "Sound Beach, NY 11789" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have other than a "Sound Beach, NY 11789" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Sound Beach): there are places in the Hamlet of Sound Beach that have a "Rocky Point, NY 11778" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

For those who may not be familiar with Middle Island:

Named for its position in the middle of Long Island -- half-way between the East River and Montauk Point, as well as half-way between the North and South shores -- Middle Island is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the central part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the east-central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Middle Island in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Miller Place and the Hamlet of Rocky Point; on the east by the Hamlet of Ridge and the Hamlet of Yaphank; on the south by the Hamlet of Yaphank and the Hamlet of Gordon Heights; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Gordon Heights and the Hamlet of Coram.

The Hamlet of Middle Island has a different border than does the "Middle Island, NY 11953" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Middle Island, NY 11953" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Middle Island and a place can be in the Hamlet of Middle Island and have other than a "Middle Island, NY 11953" mailing address): places that have a "Middle Island, NY 11953" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Middle Island are in the Hamlet of Gordon Heights, the Hamlet of Coram and the Hamlet of Ridge; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Middle Island that have a "Coram, NY 11727" and "Medford, NY 11763" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I'd go with Sound Beach...the town is assigned to Miller Place SD or Rocky Point SD, both of which are great districts with a lot of activities and parental involvement. Best of luck to you!
