Hello All - although I plan on speaking to the RVC building department on Monday, I was hoping to get some feedback here from anyone with experience.

After putting in an offer on a great house in RVC we “heard” RVC is difficult to get a pool permit. Upon an internet search I saw that RVC requires a 10 foot set back from property lines (every other area I have looked at only required 4 feet) and 6 foot set back from any structure (such as a deck). Now, when I looked through the area on google maps I saw many pools that were clearly not in compliance with that set back (yes I measured it too I didn’t eye ball it).

My questions:
Are these homeowners getting variances? Is the variance process in RVC that easy?
Are they doing this without permits...
Do decks count as an accessory structure meaning a pool needs to be 6 feet away from a deck or patio?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just built a pool in rvc. The process was smooth. Rvc was actually pretty quick on permits not only for pool but also for other renovations I did.
I did not need to get any variance; my pool was compliant with the rules. I believe it's an 8 ft set back from a structure. Double check the rules.

Thanks Doctor G, do you recall hearing whether or not a deck counts as a structure?

I have not. You can stop by the building department and talk to the plan examiner during their consultation hours. Check the web site for exact hours. Good luck!

I am formerly from the TNH, generally speaking if you can't move it, it is a structure.
