So I read in the paper today that one guy, not the top earner, would have had to work 22.4 hours per day Mon-Fri. Or 16 hours a day 365 days a year. Doesn't seem plausible.
being this is the LIRR, the recipient probably earned triple time for such events as working on his sister-in-law's birthday, triple time and a half if the temperature goes above 60 degrees or under 40 degrees, etc.
therefore much less overtime is required to make almost a half million.
I absolutely love how the politicians in these articles are so appalled and flabbergasted that something like this could be allowed. Fresh fodder to feed the idiots who actually think these guys are working for them while in office.
This isn't to let the LIRR off the hook. Just an observation.

Let's not just blame the workers. Management, and politicians allow this. Everyone is guilty. Let's see all the crooks rat on each other, now that it's news.

Actually Management and the politicians (I'm looking at you Gov. Fredo) are responsible for negotiating these losing contracts with the trade and RR unions that increase union wages (14% over the last two years alone), while leaving antiquated work rules and OT guidelines in the contract language. This is why an LIRR tradesman can work 16 hrs/day/360 days/year and 'earn' as much as a doctor. Oh wait, that's right, the doctor probably doesn't have as plush a retirement package.
On top of this, the service quality has eroded considerably over the last 10 years alone. Must be very frustrating to rely on the LIRR for your livelihood.
Napping on job or OT goes on all over; wherever there is union (or not), just a fact of life. Everyone knows about it and unless someone drops a quarter, and or the media gets wind of story.....
Only difference is with union getting rid of someone is more difficult than in private sector if they are caught napping.
There is no way humanly possible for someone to remain awake and alert for > 16 hours straight. Coffee alone won't do it; uppers are a maybe but that opens up a whole other can of worms.

Wha? I worked 16 hrs yesterday (7am-11pm). I do it fairly regularly when necessary. No idea what you're talking about. I'm sure others working 2 jobs would agree. And I don't get OT.
What do you expect when you have union contracts that basically guarantees them a wage and a job year after year? Who has incentive to actually do right by the customers or even for them to work hard at all? Lowest common denominator will rule. Is this rocket surgery? Seriously, what do people expect will happen??????????
As a consumer, and as an educated worker, I side with the "big bad corporations" when it comes to at-will employment. Easily. Talk about hand-outs and entitlement of millenials... Jesus H Christ look at yourselves.
