Why does LIRR and Metro North Cost more than NJTransit, Path, Subway.

The service is crap in every single one of the above. The subway and path are fixed cost, regardless of distance.

The LIRR and MNRR cost MORE to go to poorer neighborhoods. Why is that?

LI people have more money to spend on transit, and happy to pay a premium to the LIRR for the excellent service.

Metro North is more reliable than LIRR when it comes to being on time from my experience. LIRR is rock bottom. Always was.Always will be.

Some may disagree with your observations:

New Jersey Transit has very few funding options. The MTA OTOH has their hands in your back pocket even if you never set foot on a train or bus.

Mortgage recording tax

Employer payroll tax

Various utility surcharges (telephone, gas, electric, etc...)

And coming soon congestion pricing.....

All this piled on top of fare and toll revenue plus the fact MTA issues a boatload of debt.

I was speaking from the fare point of view not how Cuomo and his cronies pick our pockets from everything from cell phones to tolls to pay for the MTA

It's all related; transit is what it is, and money must come from somewhere. If fare box recovery won't do it (and historically it never has), then other funding streams must be found.

Back when LIRR was part of PRR as with all other private railways in USA freight subsidized if not outright paid the bills for passenger/commuter service. As freight diminished (thanks to trucks and new highway system), some local governments paid the RRs to run commuter service as well.

When Penn Central went bankrupt NYS stepped up and took over LIRR, but question was and still is how to fund the thing.

There isn't a passenger/commuter RR in this country or world for that matter which operates without some sort of direct or indirect government subsidy. They cannot; if passengers alone were forced to pay entire cost prices would be so high many would simply find other means of travel.

Penn Central never ran LIRR. NYS took over LIRR before NY Central and PRR merged into Penn Central.
