Well, why don't you move to Smithtown?

Can anyone comment on what the commute from Smithtown to Cold Spring Harbor (specifically, the labs) is like?

Bear in mind, I'm a Chicagoan so I know traffic. People complain about traffic here in NC (Triangle) and I have to laugh. So, assuming a city background, how's the commute?

Default For those who may not be familiar with Laurel Hollow

The first thing you need to know is that the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory may have a "Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724" mailing address but it is in Laurel Hollow, which is in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, and not in Cold Spring Harbor, which is in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County.

For those who may not be familiar with Laurel Hollow:

Laurel Hollow is a village (incorporated in 1926 as Laurelton, after a local mansion; but, because of confusion with a Queens County community of the same name, the village changed it to Laurel Hollow in 1935) located in the northeast part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Huntington town line and the Nassau/Suffolk county line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Laurel Hollow in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Cold Spring Harbor; on the east by the Hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor in the Town of Huntington (the Oyster Bay/Huntington town line and the Nassau/Suffolk county line); on the south by the Hamlet of Woodbury; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Syosset and the Village of Oyster Bay Cove.

Laurel Hollow is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address: places in the Village of Laurel Hollow have an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771", "Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724", "Woodbury, NY 11797" and "Syosset, NY 11791" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

One option is to take Rte 25A, a winding state road, two lanes. Gets heavy at times, but moves. I make the round trip run from Kings Park to Stony Brook 2X/week at 515 PM and it's not a bad ride at all. 20 mins on average.

I used to drive between Huntington & Smithtown 5X a week at rush hour and 25A would get a bit snarky in Huntington, but again opened up east of it.

If you did the whole ride on 25A at rush hour, I am thinking 35 mins CSH Lab to Smithtown. It is a very pleasant ride, in and out of towns, lots of pleasant scenery. I found it helped de-stress me after a bad day at work.

Mapquest gives directions based on Park to 25(Jericho Tpke) and states 15 miles 30 mins. I would NEVER take Jericho tpke at rush hour. It is stop light after stop light, congested, idiots in and out of shopping centers. UGH

another option - pick up Pulaski Rd off 25a in Kings Park , take that west across 110 and then to Woodbury - W. Rouges Path to 108 (harbor road) - north to Cold Spring Harbor. I do this on my bicycle ! Do anything to avoid Huntington Village (25a and 110 intersection is always backed up)

I take Pulaski into Greenlawn, never thought to go that route to CSH. I have to try it!

i checked on Mapquest . You can actually stay on Pulaski directly to 108 (Harbor Rd) north. It straddles the Nassau/Suffolk county line (Suffolk side).
It's even more direct. The ride up 108 is beautiful !!! Ponds on the west side.
The Rouges Path route is easier on a bicycle, though.
Hope it works for you.
