We recently went there, and discovered that "Little Africa" is actually called "Schubert's Beach". I double checked with a cop who was at the playground in his uniform, LOL. It is literally a stone throw away from Long Beach, people walk from one to the other without noticing it. We went there at 6:30pm on a weekday. My impressions of it were neutral.
It is a tiny little place, mainly occupied by local folks who all know each other well, and come there after work to meet up with their spouses, kids, and friends. There is a standard run of the mill playground, bathrooms, showers, many grills, a central open air pavillion with lots of wooden tables where people gather to eat and play music. What makes it unique, and hence the name, is an abundance of trees, which are not to tall, not too short, offering just the right amount of shade. So with the big central pavillion, and lots of sand, it sort of looks like an African village.
Just behind a dune and a little lookout tower is a small rocky beach with a few giant stones in water to sit on. Again, we saw mainly locals there. Some fishing, some coming straight from the office in their shirts and ties. Everyone was standing and chatting. There were a few couples on the sand. To the west, many people were windsurfing. Overall, it was very quiet and peaceful there. We will be coming back for the nice beach experience. Lifeguards are on duty from 10am-5pm.
Long Island is great don't you all think? No matter how much we complain, how rude we come across to each other, at the end of the day we can relaaaax here and that's all that matters. Splashing waves on the south, quiet stillness on the North, farms to the East, NYC to the west (it was beautiful at the Central Park today BTW).
I feel like we'll all be intruding, but here is a pic of the pavillion on somebody's wedding website (look under "the big day"):
