Moving to Centereach, LI. Need advise.
Can anyone please give us an honest assessment of Centereach? We have heard good things about the town, bad things about the school district (Middle Country) leaving us unsure if this is the right move. Would like to hear from anyone who lives there about their experiences (schools? over crowded? traffic? shopping? home values thru the years, up or down? people?) Thanks......

For those who may not be familiar with Centereach:
Centereach is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the west part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Centereach in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket; on the east by the Hamlet of Terryville and the Hamlet of Selden; on the south by the Hamlet of Farmingville, the Hamlet of Holtsville and the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma, the Village of Lake Grove and the Hamlet of Stony Brook.
The Hamlet of Centereach has a different border than does the "Centereach, NY 11720" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Centereach, NY 11720" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Centereach and a place can have other than a "Centereach, NY 11720" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Centereach): places that have a "Centereach, NY 11720" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Centereach are in the Hamlet of Farmingville and the Hamlet of Selden; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Centereach with a "Selden, NY 11784" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Some parts of Centereach have well kept homes while others are a little tired looking. There is plenty of shopping along Middle Country Rd and public transportation. Along with the shopping on Middle County Rd, there can be a lot of traffic at certain times of the day -- mostly rush hours.
Compared with some of the surrounding towns, home values have been more reasonably priced allowing first time buyers an opportunity to own. The reasonably priced homes are introducing a greater variety of people to the area. Most of the people I know in the area are decent, hardworking blue collar men and women, some own their own businesses. With the close proximity to SUNY Stony Brook and University Hospital, there are a number of residents who are employed there.
I have friends who like the MCSD, others who aren't thrilled with it.
Best of luck with your move!

I just rented a house to a couple who are relocating to Centereach because the prices are affordable. What a GORGEOUS neighborhood...I had never seen it before! The streets to this neighborhood were Holbrook Rd to S Washington. The homes were pretty wow and the neighborhood was pretty awsome! Lots of kids playing in the streets and basketball hoops in front of homes. There are some houses for sale in there and I found out the prices were $500,000 and below.

My cousin lives in Centereach, she has been very happy with the schools. I'm a firm believer that education is much more about parenting than district.
They have a fantastic public library, one of the best on LI.
The area is a little too congested for me(but that's a personal preference) and I know the town of brookhaven is working on trying to get Middle country road to look a little better, there are lots of strip malls & some of them are ratty looking.
I think its an average working class area.

The area is very specific. Anywhere near dawn dr. you probable do not want to live near. The area by arrowhead rd and the strathmore gate area is very nice. Middle country schools are a pretty average school district. Definitely safe and still good educators. I have known many past students and friends with kids in the district and they approve.

i have lived in Centereach for almost forty years and had three children in the school district. I have no complaints. As some one else has said it depends on the child and the crowd they choose to hang with as they get older. Some are good and some are bad just like anywhere else.
I live in that lovely neighborhood off S. Washington but it is getting hard for me to afford to stay here as a senior so I probably will be selling in the near future
