I'm moving from out of state to Long Island. Which is the better neighborhood for a family with pre-schoolers? I've checked the school ratings and they seem similar and I've checked the real estate. My concern now is a good family neighborhood. Which neighborhood has more to offer and a strong sense of community?

hello, and good luck to you with the move. I would have to say that both towns are nice family communities. They both offer wonderful pre-schools and nursery schools. Both of these towns have wonderful parks and shops. I don't know that one has more to offer then the next does. I guess if it were me looking, it would depend on the price range we were shopping for a home in. If you give me an idea of price and what type of home you are looking for maybe I could be of some more help to you. Are you looking for a single family home? One with a large yard? On the water? How much work are you willing/or want to do in the home? For me there are a lot of variables that would determine where I would pick to live. Hope this helped some.

We are looking for a house that doesn't need too much work. Anything in high 500's to low 600's with taxes hopefully not more than 10,000.We would like a nice size yard.

For those who may not be familiar with Wantagh
For those who may not be familiar with Wantagh:
Wantagh is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast section of the Town of Hempstead, in the southeast part of Nassau County
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Wantagh in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Wantagh; on the east by the Hamlet of Seaford; on the south by the East Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Bellmore and the Hamlet of North Bellmore.
The Hamlet of Wantagh has a different border than does the "Wantagh, NY 11793" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Wantagh, NY 11793" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Wantagh): places that have a "Wantagh, NY 11793" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Wantagh are in the Hamlet of Seaford, the Hamlet of Bellmore, the Hamlet of North Bellmore, the Hamlet of North Wantagh and the Hamlet of Levittown.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

For those who may not be familiar with Massapequa
For those who may not be familiar with Massapequa:
Massapequa is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the southeast part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Massapequa in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Massapequa; on the east by the Village of Massapequa Park; on the south by South Oyster Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Seaford in the Town of Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line).
Massapequa is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have a "Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Massapequa are in the Hamlet of North Massapequa and the Hamlet of East Massapequa.

Both are great towns and in your price range......I like Wantagh but I maybe biased. My best friend and uncle lives in Massapequa and they both love it.
You can't go wrong. Best of luck!

I agree. Both very nice. You should also take a look at Seaford, similar to the 2. I have heard, though, that of this section of LI, there can be a portion of Massapequa people that think they're hot stuff, more so than other South Shore towns...my mother-in-laws "friends" are one of them. I think, overall, a small %, but something I guess to consider. Really, though, you can't go wrong with any.

No doubt about it, there is certainly a Massapequa 'tude. It's a minority, but surely a vocal one. This same phenomenon doesn't seem to affect the other southeast Nassau areas at all, save for isolated incidents. Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa/Massapequa Park/East Massapequa are all very similar (in other words everything east of the Meadowbrook Parkway and roughly south of the Southern State). Odds are if you like one you'll like the others.

Your spelling is not a great advertisement for the quality of the Massapequa schools.
Regarding the towns, school taxes in Wantagh are even higher than Massapequa (which are very high to begin with). Wantagh school district is smaller and I think that can be an advantage. I live in Massapequa and wouldn't think of moving anywhere else, but the size of the school district is daunting especially if you kid wants to get on any school sports team.
