Vacation Rental in Shirley - Need Advice!
Hoping someone who lives in or near the Shirley area could provide some insight into the safety of the area in Shirley that is about a mile from Smith Point Fire Island Beach.
Planning on being in the LI area and hoping to rent a place for a week's vacation. Found a cute place in Shirley but a family member expressed concerns about the area...He's checking out the house/neighborhood over the weekend but would prefer to hear from someone who actually lives in the area.
Thanks!!
PS - We're painfully spoiled, live in very uneventful NH where we never, ever lock our doors...Don't want to go on vacation and have to "pack some heat" to be safe...know what I mean? LOL!

For those who may not be familiar with Shirley
For those who may not be familiar with Shirley:
Shirley is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the southeast part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Shirley in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Yaphank and the Hamlet of Manorville; on the east by the Hamlet of Manorville, the Hamlet of Mastic and the Hamlet of Mastic Beach; on the south by Bellport Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Brookhaven and the Hamlet of Yaphank.
The Hamlet of Shirley has a different border than does the "Shirley, NY 11967" ZIP code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Shirley and a place can have other than a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Shirley): places that have a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Shirley are in the Hamlet of Mastic and the Hamlet of Mastic Beach; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Shirley with a "Mastic, NY 11950" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

PS - I should state that we have no plans to "vacation" in Shirley. We'll be all over the island and city. We just found a weekly rental that is located in Shirley. We'll basically sleep there, eat breakfast and be off for the day.

unfortunately these areas might be too pricey for him especially coming into the spring and summer. The hamptons crowds are usually coming in now so out in that direction can get $$$. If you are looking to be near the water and not specific where try bayport south of montauk hwy (west of shirley) or if you want to stay out east try the north fork by the water (mattituck, nassau point, southold) which if you book early enough it wont kill you on price and they are much nicer and safer areas then shirley.

Most of the homes near the water in Mastic Beach & Shirley are old summer bungalows and cottages although I suspect they're probably year round residences now. I just discovered that area recently and thought it was pretty cool, reminded me of old pictures I've seen of south shore Nassau from the turn of the prior century.
I took some pictures when I was out there but none came out great....they still have dirt roads!
If you're gonna be all around the island, it'll do for a week. Some people who live out there love it, others associate it with white trash and sex offenders. It looks dumpy in spots but doesn't seem to quite live up to it's "rep" from what I've seen....then again I usually only go there to get Roy Rogers and cheap cigarettes from the Poospatuck Reservation. For a week the odds of you getting shot, stabbed, mugged, raped or murdered are extremely slim!
If the prices are similar (as Lancet71 said) on the North Fork, you would be much better served going that route. The scenery is mind blowing and the whole atmosphere is so relaxing...looking out over green pastures and feeling the cool, crisp sea breeze. Just thinking about it makes me want to start driving east right now!

Hey...thanks for the photo and feedback! I should note that I'm from LI...I'm from Smithtown so am familiar with most of the island. Although I don't recall ever venturing into the Shirley/Mastic area but when I saw Shirley I had some concerns. When I told my brother where the house was his first comment was, "ohhh, white trash!" LOL!
I should also note that I have checked out a bunch of places for weekly rentals in other areas and the prices are huge...$2K and above. The house in Shirley, $600..hard to beat the price! It's a tiny house, called a cottage, but it will work for us and we want to be close to family. Lots of photos and the place looks well maintained and up-to-date. And being out east puts us too far away from the areas we'll be visiting.
I'd like to be able be out in the yard without fear of a driveby shooting. I'm exaggerating of course but from some of the posts I've read you wouldn't send your worst enemy into Shirley!
Thanks for the continued feedback, it really is helpful!!

It really depends upon where in Shirley. Some homes close by the beach are nice, some spots up toward Montauk....bleech.
