Default Salisbury, Merrick, or Alberston?

We are looking to relocate in Nassau County but are not too familiar with good school districts, etc. We can't decide whether we want to go north, south or stay central (salisbury, westbury). We found a great home in salisbury, but a friend of mine said that although it's in the eastmeadow school district, that particualar school district has had union problems in the past and I know that effects the teachers. We liked that area because of the diversity. Merrick has great homes, but not very diverse? and the Alberston/Herricks area has such small overpriced capes compared to the other two. Can someone offer me some good advice. I have 3 children---one who will be entering middle school in Sept. We'd consider westchester, if we knew anything about it.

IMO I would pick Albertson, Merrick, then Westbury in that order. Merrick is not very diverse, so if that is an overriding factor, you may not want to go there.

I'm not sure if the teachers union ever got a new contract in East Meadow or not, but it was not pretty. No new contract for 3 years and the district was playing hardball. Teachers moral was very low. Again, I would make sure that they finally setteld the contract.

Herricks has always been a good district, so you may get what you pay for.

Merrick maybe the "best bang for your buck"

Good luck!

Default For those who may not be familiar with Salisbury

Places in Salisbury may have a "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address (a small slice in the east part has a "Levittown, NY 11756" mailing address), but it is not in, or any part of, the Village of Westbury in the Town of North Hempstead.

For those who may not be familiar with Salisbury:

Salisbury is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast section of the Town of Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County, where the Town of Hempstead converges with the Towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay. (In 1990, Salisbury, previously known as South Westbury, was renamed and also combined with the part of the Hamlet of East Meadow that was in the "Westbury, NY 11590" and "Levittown, NY 11756" postal zones.)

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Salisbury in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay (the Hempstead/Oyster Bay Town line) and the Hamlet of Levittown; and, on the south and west by the Hamlet of East Meadow.

Salisbury is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Salisbury have a "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address, except for a small slice in the east part that have a "Levittown, NY 11756" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
