Default East Norwich Oyster Bay

How is the school district and the area? i noticed that the houses are somewhat reasonably priced and taxes are low... it borders syosset. does anyone have any information?

we've been looking at a million houses (i am not kidding) and thought maybe we should try looking elsewhere since we can't seem to find something we love in those areas.

we were considering syosset and old bethpage. we love dix hills, but the commute is a little far. we've also looked at port washington and roslyn heights, but wanted a little more land.

Default Go Plainview

Hi there...I don't think the Oyster Bay school district is very good. I send my kids to private school in Syosset and a lot of the kids come from Oyster Bay. The taxes are high in Syosset because the public schools are top rated.

I live in Plainview and I am currently selling my house...let me know if you are interested!

If you want a lot of property, then you have to go out east further...depending on what you want to spend for a house.

Good luck!

Default For those who may not be familiar with East Norwich

For those who may not be familiar with East Norwich:

East Norwich is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.

Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Hamlet of East Norwich in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Village of Upper Brockville, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the east by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the south by the Hamlet of Syosset and the Village of Muttontown; and, on the west by the Village of Muttontown and the Village of Upper Brookville.

The Hamlet of East Norwich has a different border than does the "East Norwich, NY 11732" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "East Norwich, NY 11732" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of East Norwich and a place can be in the Hamlet of East Norwich and have other than an "East Norwich, NY 11732" mailing address): places that have an "East Norwich, NY 11732" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of East Norwich are in the Village of Upper Brookville, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and the Village of Muttontown; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of East Norwich that have an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address. (Additionally, the "East Norwich, NY 11732" postal zone is a "bifurcated" postal zone: it consists of two non-connected areas, with the two (2) areas separated by the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" postal zone.)

Default For those who may not be familiar with Oyster Bay

For those who may not be familiar with Oyster Bay:

Oyster Bay is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north most part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Oyster Bay Harbor; on the east by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the south by the Hamlet of East Norwich; and, on the west by the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck.

Oyster Bay is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where most of the places that have the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay are in the Village of Centre Island, the Village of Cove Neck, the Village of Oyster Bay Cove, the Village of Laurel Hollow, the Hamlet of East Norwich, the Village of Muttontown, the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck.

Try Glen Head or Sea Cliff. You'll find a bit more land. I'm not sure what you mean by reasonable price but the prices are comparable to OB & East Norwich....NS schools are very sought after.

The high school gets a 9/10 on Greatschools.net with nothing but positive reviews:

From: Oyster Bay High School - Oyster Bay, New York - NY - school overview

I have a ninth grader in OBHS and she has been in this district since kindergarten. I get very involved in the PTA, etc and have had the opportunity to meet teachers and administrators and know some on a 1st name basis. The district is small, most students are known by their first names to members of the staff- right down to the custodians who are a very dedicated team. The administrators are very educated and talented. Most of the teachers I've met are truly meant to be teachers and really seem to enjoy their work. OBHS- and the whole district has a very good music program and are known for their extensive program for children with special needs. Oyster Bay also has much diversity amongst it's students as it incorporates a downtown area as well as large estate homes and the staff is keenly aware of the challenges presented.

Standard Rankings from the '06-'07 school year:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/1805859-post33.html

Massapequa High School (Massapequa)................................186.8 (N/<1%)
Elwood/John Glenn HS (Elwood).......................................... .186.4 (S/12%)
Lynbrook Senior HS (Lynbrook)........................................ ....186.3 (N/<1%)
New Hyde Park Memorial (NHP)............................................1 86.0 (N/4%)
Bayport-Blue Point HS (Bayport-Blue Point)............................185.8 (S/4%)
Oyster Bay HS (Oyster Bay-East Norwich).............................183.4 (N/9%)
Mattituck SHS (Mattituck-Cutchogue)..................................178.9 (S/4%)
Hicksville High School (Hicksville)...................................... ...178.1 (N/9%)
Northport SHS (Northport-East Northport).............................177.5 (S/5%)
Westhampton Beach SHS (Westhampton Beach).....................177.3 (S/3%)
South Side High School (Rockville Centre).............................175.4 (N/11%)

I was always told it wasn't a great district too, but I think this opinion may be skewed by the fact that it is surrounded by what are basically publicly funded Ivy League prep schools. It ranked #34 out of all of Long Island, with only 12 Suffolk County districts scoring higher. Looking at it on a broader scale, this seems to be one of the better districts in either county.

WHat about Sea Cliff? It is very nice, you might like it if it's in your price range. Great schools too!

The Village of Sea Cliff is the most unique community on LI: Sea Cliff is the ONLY city, village or hamlet in either Nassau County or Suffolk County where the same-named ZIP Code postal zone (Sea Cliff, NY 11579 = 752 acres) is coterminous with the community whose name it shares (Village of Sea Cliff = 752 acres).

For those who may not be familiar with Sea Cliff:

Sea Cliff is a village (incorporated in 1883) in the northwest part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the north-central part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Sea Cliff is bordered on the north by the City of Glen Cove; on the east by the Hamlet of Glen Head; on the south by the Hamlet of Glenwood Landing; and, on the west by Hempstead Harbor.

Unlike every other of the 293 communities (2 cities + 96 villages + 196 hamlets = 293 communities) in either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, the village (Sea Cliff = 752 acres) and the ZIP Code postal zone postal zone (Sea Cliff, NY 11579 = 752 acres) that use the same name, have the exact same border.
