Hicksville ..YAY OR NAY????
I am considering purchasing a house in Hicksville, not so familiar with the area, but as far as taxes, commute to the city etc, it seems to fit the bill. However, I want to hear from people who actually LIVE there....What has your experience been with living in the area, the schools, the commute to the train, "community feel" , we are irish catholic, early 30's, would we fit in etc, etc, ...Let me have it, I can take it, the good and the bad..thanking everyone in advance for their honesty
I already know that the area close to the Broadway mall is not the nicest, but other than that??

For those who may not be familiar with Hicksville:
Once the potato capital of LI, Hicksville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east-central part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead/Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Jericho and the Hamlet of Syosset; on the east by the Hamlet of Plainview and the Hamlet of Bethpage; on the south by the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Salisbury in the Town of Hempstead and the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead/North Hempstead town line).
The Hamlet of Hicksville has a different border than does the "Hicksville, NY 11801" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and a place can be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and have other than a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address): places with a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hicksville are in the Hamlet of Jericho; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hicksville that have a "Bethpage, NY 11714", "Jericho, NY 11753" and "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I live in Hicksville, its a good town but the demographics are changing to Indian. The main drag Broadway has a lot of Indian catered resteraunts and stores opening up. Trains are good since the Ronkonkoma and Huntington branches run through here and you can get into the city in about 40 minutes. The area west of the Broadway Mall is not the best, but the area behind Sears is pretty good since its on the Jericho and Plainview borders.

If you're looking for a good Irish Catholic neighborhood, look a bit further south to Massapequa. Large Irish population and at least three Catholic churches in the area.

Indians are a model immigrant community. Strong families, entrepeneural, very patriotic.
Whether or not it was implied, I don't think the growing Indian presence says anything negative of Hicksville at all: only positive.

IMO, Hicksville is not as stable as other areas of Long Island. Its not as nice as it was 10 years ago.

Never said it was a negative thing. Just stating a point.

Gotta go with "nay", especially around the train station. By Sears and east toward S.Oyster Bay rd is better, but around the train station, W.john street and vicinity there's alot of illegals around, the houses look in bad shape (more flophouses).
Hicksville is one of those neighborhoods that used to be great in the 80s, but has turned bad these days due to slumlords buying up homes as ppl move out and stuff in illegals. They loiter all down Broadway and W.John street. Also heard there was a gang attack on Newbridge rd not too far from the train station, probably MS-13 related.
It's a shame how a once nice town has been ruined. I often like to use Hicksville as an example of what has happened on Long Island. In the 80s, Hicksville, Jericho, Syosset were mainly blue collar middle class. Jericho and Syosset got wealthy and expensive while Hicksville went downhill, a direct example of what happens when middle class baby boomers move out.
Now the people that mow the lawns in jericho and syosset live in Hicksville. I see it all the time on the bus. N94 from Woodbury/Syosset to Hicksville PACKED. 2/3 of the bus gets off for the N48/49 to Hempstead or N22 (to New Cassel, W.John street, and Westbury). The other 1/3 walks down toward Broadway or the 'hood just south of the station.
It's a perfect example of how a middle class to upper middle class area of Long Island has been split into an expensive wealthy area and a Barrio.

The Indian presence isn't what's doing Hicksville in, it's the illegals from Central America. They got some El Salvador bodegas on Broadway.
That's what's bringing the town down. They're here illegally and are only here to do day labor and send the money back to their family "at home".
They dont invest in their communities.
It's why illegal immigration is so bad for our towns.

Maybe further down Broadway, but just south of the tracks it's mainly central American and it caters to illegals.(generally from RR tracks to Old Country-illegals) You'll always see a group of them loitering outside the bodegas.
Behind Broadway mall its all flophouses, all I see are illegals living there now and lots of cars with out of state plates.
Behind Sears it's better, like you said.
