Default You are right, but...

Actually, the socio-economic status of the people you live around is perhaps the best indicator of the quality of your schools. Add to that the affect that high taxes have on your neighbors, vetting out the whining conservatives, and you end up with a socially engaged well-off majority.

The result is that you have a well-funded system and parents that can afford to demand performance because they can withdraw their students at any point, putting them in private education if they wish.

So you are right. How much you spend isn't the only factor, just an extremely important factor.

Jrprofess--

I love Suffolk, and don't miss the SS or Cross Island, but--

The one thing I do not like about living out here is that there is no direct access to major parkways.

We have to go down 347 to Nicolls, then take the LIE.
Or take 112 (which is a nightmare) to LIE.
Or 347 to the Northern (which is a 2 lane disaster).

Which is why we try to get everyone we know and love to come out here! LOL

This may be getting off topic, but how is it that when we drive 65-70 MPH on the LIE, we still get people honking us to speed up (when we're in the right lane)? I swear, getting on that thing is like playing Russian Roullette.

I hate to say this but that is the ONLY reason we did not move to Setauket (which I LOVE) and why we live in Holbrook. The commute from Holbrook is a breeze. One day when commuting is no longer an option we will move to the North Shore or way way way out east (which I love too)....I have to add this to my why I love LI thread LOL

The other poster kind of made my point but I am just in off the northern state right as 347 begins, so access is not an issue for me. Many Suffolk towns do have easy access. I suppose it is the trade off of being closer to the shores. It is also why I could not move further east on the north shore simply due to commute, although I love your area. I do not believe your situation is much different than those on the south shore of Nassau County, say Long Beach for instance, or maybe an Oceanside, who need to sit on a backed up sunrise highway or take a "stop and go" Long Beach Road to get to any parkways. Of course the advantage to their location is also being on the ocean, so it is a fine trade-off for those who's family and work commutes suit their location. Same can be said for being far north in Plandome or Port Washington if you have ever had to battle Searingtown Road. We are constantly back and forth to areas like Massapequa, Bellerose, Little Neck, etc, and find that our weekend family commutes are just as quick, although further mileage wise, than when we sat on the Southern State. I still get a cold chill when I see the sign for Eagle Avenue....that exit backs up in either direction even if it is 4:30 in the morning...

ohhh so true! i recently moved to li from northern nj and i still cant get over the low standard of living here. yes, there are a few pockets of nice communities with acceptable housing, but still nothing to write home about. in my opinion, what long islanders consider "nice" is actually sub par. everyday i look forward to finishing grad school and getting out of here so i dont have to be confronted by aluminum siding and rundown strip malls everywhere i turn.

Don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out

Seriously -- if NJ is so wonderful, why didn't you attend grad school there and free up space for someone else who wants to be here?

That post basically describes NJ, so I don't know what they're talking about.

When I first moved to NJ (lived there prior to moving to LI), I couldn't get over the icky run down strip malls and overall dinginess of NJ Towns.

...our board inhabitants would take the high road on this single poster and let the thread reclaim its death...totally narrow and uninformed opinion really doesn't warrant a reply.

Sitting in a lotus position and taking the high road,
