I attended school in Albany and the upstaters in that area considered Westchester and Rockland downstate.
I have family in Rockland who can be in Times Square faster than I can as well as clients in Larchmont (Westchester) who can be there before me, too.

The Census and Urban Development research groups bunch Rockland & Putnam counties into the NYC Metro alongside Long Island- there certainly is a concept of Downstate New York, and it does not end at Riverdale, NY.
Also considering now all these areas will be sharing Transit Payroll taxes from the MTA- I'd wager to say in a short time any area in New York serviced by the MTA Rail services will be lumped into the 'downstate' or NYC influence region.
I know NYS Empire Medical Plan also breaks the state up using regions including a Downstate region.
You certainly sound like you don't know a variety of terms like 'Western NY, Mohawk Region', etc- that really define this very large, and very diverse state.
White Plains built two 40 story towers up in less than 5 years- currently I think Uniondale peaks at ... a 5 floor somewhere.
I'm not sure your claim for rednecks and hicks is quite justified if you have a little more knowhow about the state.

Warning - Slightly Off Topic
I was recently at a friend's college grad party in Smithtown and the majority of the people there were his friends from upstate. I was dismayed by the amount of flak they gave LI and LIer's. To say they made the party suck is an understatement.
What really got me was how they went on about how we are so rich and arrogant here. It took all of the will-power I have to not retort, "Hey, somebody's gotta pay for all of the welfare checks NYS cuts to you and your lazy, redneck families."
I tell ya, we really don't need those up-stater's. How do I sign on to the LI recession movement? It would be far better to withdraw all of the money we pump into the state and let those hicks upstate starve. Big business/manufacturing had the intelligence to leave that rust-belt, black hole decades ago. The only step left is to withdraw public aid and let the principles of Social Darwinism work their magic.

Maybe you're glad you didn't say that. And maybe this is why they don't like you.

I would say that Long Island has its fair share of people who are taking those checks. Look at the school districts free and reduced lunch programs, most of those recieve checks. Drive around LI to such areas as Huntington Station, Wyandanch, Hempstead and out east to the more rural areas and see what shape LI is in. For every beautiful part of LI, there is an equal number of people living on government checks. THat is true wherever you live. There are rich areas and poor areas in every state. With this economy don't be so sure many of your neighbors are not recieving free lunch and medical benefits (at least for their kids). I have a good friend who recieved the medical benefits and you would never suspect because of where they lived. There are just as many beautiful places upstate as downstate and just as much wealth. I wouldn't not be so sure that all LI money is paying for the upstate poor, just look around your own backyard.

Ummm, I think you mean secession. LOL on the slip of the tongue, though. And when using a plural ("up-staters") no apostrophe is necessary. An apostrophe shows possession.
Your attitude is exactly what upstaters hate about LIers. If they started it, that was rude - no question. But I went to school upstate and it was a point of pride for me that no one knew I was from LI unless I came out and said it.
Like pp said, there are a-plenty of welfare people on LI. Get real.

I failed to recall to at the moment but also if anyone remembers back, both Westchester (as well as a few other lower/downstate NY counties), and Nassau/Suffolk counties long long ago all shared the same 914 Area Code.

This must have been a VERY long time ago, my parents have lived on LI for almost 50 years and it was 516 when they bought their first house. And I'm 42 years old and it was always 516 - even in Suffolk until about 10 years ago.

Because people keep posting on it? And they are entitled to, until and unless it's closed????
