Triangle Section of Melville - Pros/Cons
Triangle section of Melville - I like it, my Fiance not so much.
I see nice well maintained homes on 1/4 acres in solid middle class area with a mix of religons. Prices around 500k with taxes in the 8-9k range. Near Parkways for an easy commute and near shops.
She sees South Huntington school district, near rte. 110, no "cute downtown" area, doesn't like the name - Melville.
Is there any hope for me to change her mind....

I grew up there.
SD#13 is why it's cheaper. if those houses were south of Old Country Road it would be more expensive. Unless it's changed drastically in the past few years, it's solidly professional middle class, well kept, nice area. Route 110 is not an issue. Occasionally traffic will use New York Ave to avoid it; unless you live right there, you won't notice it.
No cute downtown but you are near the mall.

For those who may not be familiar with West Hills
Might the area that you are looking in be in that part of the Hamlet of West Hills that has a "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address (if so, this would ameliorate your fiance's concern about bring in "Melville")?
For those who may not be familiar with West Hills:
West Hills is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southwest part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County, along the Huntington/Oyster Bay town line and Nassau/Suffolk county line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of West Hills in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor and the Hamlet of Huntington Station; on the east by the Hamlet of Huntington Station and Hamlet of South Huntington; on the south by the Hamlet of Melville; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Woodbury in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County (the Huntington/Oyster Bay town line and the Suffolk/Nassau county line).
West Hills is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of West Hills have a "Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724", "Huntington, NY 11743", "Huntington Station, NY 11746" and "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address.

Maybe I was given wrong information. I was under the impression that the "triangle section" of Melville on a map looks like an upside down triangle with its borders- 110 on the West - Old Country Road on the East and Wolf Hill Road on the North. The majority of the area goes to South Huntington School District, but a small pocket goes to Half Hollow Hills.
The few houses we have looked at and liked fall in the South Huntington District. We have both heard negative things about that district, but I ask myself - I've only heard it about the HS - and that is drugs and gangs. What about the grade schools and Jr. High.
If this area is a solid professional middle class area - the people that live there are smart, hard working, and looking to improve their station in life - right? So why would they live in an area that has bad schools?

Perhaps you could buy her something nice at Bloomingdales, which is a five minute ride away, or, if she is a sports fan, enjoy a Saturday watching a game at Saint Anthony's High School. The triangle area is really nice. You have nothing to worry about.

Nope, walter, the triangle is as the OP described it: New York Avenue, Wolf Hill Road, Old Country Road. West Hills is another neighborhood. Walter, there's a bigger chunk of 11747 that's zoned to SD#13; the Triangle is only a part of it.
The high school is not that bad. Half Hollow Hills residents look down their nose at it. It's partly a race issue (Whitman is one of the few integrated high schools on LI). There WAS a gang problem around 2000 but other posters here say the principal has worked hard to improve things. The HS isn't on the level of Half Hollow Hills, but it's fine. The elementary schools are very good. In the Triangle it's Countrywood for K-2 and Birchwood for 3-5 unless they've rezoned again.

For those who may not be familiar with Melville
The Hamlet of Melville it is then.
For those who may not be familiar with Melville:
First called Sunsquams by the Indians, and in the 17th century was named Samuel Ketcham's Valley, after one of the early settlers, and, still later, the area became known as Sweet Hollow, Melville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southwest part of the Town of Huntington, in the west part of Suffolk County, along the Huntington/Babylon town line and the Huntington/Oyster Bay town line, and the Suffolk/Nassau county line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Melville in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of West Hills and the Hamlet of South Huntington; on the east by the Hamlet of Dix Hills; on the south by the Hamlet of Wheatley Heights, the Hamlet of Wyandanch and the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Babylon (the Huntington/Babylon town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Old Bethpage and the Hamlet of Plainview in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County (the Huntington/Oyster Bay town line and the Suffolk/Nassau county line).
The Hamlet of Melville has a different border than does the "Melville, NY 11747" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Melville and a place can have other than a "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Melville): places that have a "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Melville are in the Hamlet of West Hills, the Hamlet of South Huntington, the Hamlet of Wheatley Heights and the Hamlet of Wyandanch; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Melville with a "Wyandanch, NY 11798" mailing address.
