1. Does it bring you joy more than you put in?
2. Are you the contributor, or the beneficiary?
3. Most importantly, do you feel patriotic about the place?
4. What is your goal, are you in here for a good life or $$$?
See if you want to start a family and live a good life here, this is not the place. This is a place to make money, haul @ss and find a way to use that money and live somewhere else one day.
you sacrifice say 10 years of your life to live in this Moderator cut: crude language removed live 50 years better elsewhere, rather than 60 years better elsewhere without the cash.
If you are making fat stacks here, kudos. That's what the goal is here. If you actually want to live the american dream and are earning < 100k, you're better off in in texas, FL, or somewhere in a 2nd world country that is attracting citizens instead of kicking them out.
Your choice, but make sure you choose a path. There is no in between bouncing off the walls. It's either making fat stacks here or living happily elsewhere. the people in between are lost in the abyss and look like your average LI'er: clueless, confused, and happy with their 700 sqft sinking shack w/ < 100k on their savings. 50 w/ kids graduating 'top' schools working at local pizzeria's.

This theory works if you have a high paying job in NYC that can’t be done elsewhere.
But many people in areas like tech have left LI and are making the same or more elsewhere and are earning considerably more than $100K. Many people I know who left are making $200K+ base salary in places like NC or TX.
$100K is a sucker’s wage on LI because teachers and police make more and get far better benefits.
So in reality you can earn more, pay less, and have a higher quality of life elsewhere.
The reasons many stay are due to family, or that high paying NYC Wall St job that doesn’t pay the same elsewhere.

I'm never worried about money. I'm always worried about time. You can always make money, but you can't create more hours in the day.
Majority of LIers spend their time to make money. I'm talking in terms of commuting to the city. LI needs more developed cities. There's no comparison between Westchester County's cities and Nassau County's cities. No need to even discuss Suffolk. It's just fine the way it is.
Hempstead does not look like White Plains, New Rochelle and Yonkers due to NIMBYism, and other archaic trains of thought.
Long Beach is the only place on LI that rivals Westchester County cities IMO in terms of American modernist urban growth. It actually has a healthy mix of housing stock, ranging from condo/rental apartment buildings, to bungalows, to mansions, to public housing. Not to mention thriving commercial and industrial services. I forgot! They have their own bus system as well.
Not every place on the Island needs to look like this, but the areas around major LIRR stations should be more built up at least, i.e. residential apartment buildings. Need somewhere to house the young workforce and keep dollars on the Island. Freeport could easy steal Long Beach's model.

Nice fantasy. Most aren't making "fat stacks" here, but maybe a solid $100-$250k for a family. I don't think anyone is getting 50 yrs out of that somewhere else, unless thy take over the Unabomber's cabin lease in Montana.
The reality is wages and costs are usually fairly symbiotic. Deviations from that are due to rapid growth in some cities/metros attracting new residents. Eventually the costs will go up or wages will stabilize. That's how it works pretty much everywhere. So anywhere you live in America, most of us will be working that whole 50 years, rather than "hating but earning big bucks" 10 yrs here and "loving but earning peanuts" for 50 yrs somewhere else." That's just goofy.
I split because of the expense to value ratio.
Just not worth it.
Rude and obnoxious self centered people, the traffic and congestion.
Property taxes outpacing my salary every year, and working like a jackass just to stay in the rat race. Just. Not. Worth. It.
Anyone of value to me is either dead, or already moved so that just made the exodus easier.
Things will never change here. LI is what it is. Just a vicious cycle that keeps going around.

Hey don't feel bad, it's all by design.

He's making fat stax that's why he wants to DIY his roof. Making fat stax and living where the neighbors don't care he demo'd his pool and will leave the old roof in the yard till he gets around to hauling it to the dump. Cue Sanford and Sons music.

Broke people spend money and rich folk count every dime. Not sure if you are aware, but thats why broke people spend 15k on roofs that cost 7k. There is a reason why the poor stay poor.
