Default Home Owners Insurance

Hello Everyone,

Well... I'm at the point where I am looking for home owners insurance so we can go to closing!!!! I would like to see who you would recommend and if there is any "options" that I should take that I am not aware of.

Thank you in advance.

BTW... I started out just peroidically reading this message board, and now it has turned into a "must read" everyday. Thanks for all of the insight and great discussions in these forums!

I use Travelers and am very happy. I can give you a name if you need an agent.

Make sure that you get the rider called "additional cost replacement protection"

Good luck!

You may also want to consider flood insurance, even if you are not in a "flood zone". It's very cheap and will be well worth while if LI ever gets hit with the hurricane that they seem to predict every year.

Hey KB, I would like to give Travelers a call, please send me info.

Thanks

Thank you Tom for your input. These forums probably wouldn't run if it weren't for the both of you

I use Travelers, and they pull my payment from my checking account three times and then took a month to put it back. I was overdrawn on my checking account for a month. I'm not very happy with them. Their phone customer service was very poor, non-responsive.

As my policy comes up for renewal, I will be looking elsewhere. As such, I'll be following this thread.

I have Allstate and they were very responsive when I had an issue a couple of years ago.

Travelers carried my business liability insurance; when I had an issue they refused to cover me and as it turned out, they had numerous 'escape' clauses written into it. I would sooner self insure than use Travelers.

Oops, sorry!

I thought that there was some sort of legal decision stopping insurance carriers from doing that.

OnOurWayHome is on a distinguished road
We just closed this week and had some problems finding an insurer since the new house has an underground oil tank and is less than a mile from the water. Our auto policy was with Liberty Mutual and they would not insure us for both the reasons above. We called a contact my friend had at Allstate, and he ended up referring us to State Farm, who wrote the policy.

Neither do Farmers, Statefarm, Geico or USAA. Many companies have pulled out of LI (for new policies) because of the hurricane threat.

I ended up using Castle Point Ins...not many choices anymore unfortunately.
