My husband accepted a job in Yaphank. We are looking to move approx. 1 hour from NYC (by car). Good schools are a must, as I am a teacher. Our real estate budget is approx $300,000. Any town suggestions?

That's not going to be easy on that budget.

I've been looking around in Levittown, Bethpage, Farmingdale and Hicksville. Not sure that 1 hour by car is possible with traffic but the prices are at least closer to your stated budget. There were some fixer uppers that I've seen in that range. I'm curious though, if your husband is working in Yaphank why do you need to be within an hour of the city? Will you be teaching in NYC? If not, you might want to look further East because it seems like you might get more for your $$ there.

You can find a decent house in Rocky Point within your budget. You won't be an hour from NYC, but your husband will be fifteen minutes from work. There are many homes on the market now for around that price. You may not find your ideal home, and it may need some work, however I would say Rocky Point is your best option.

As for schools, check out GreatSchools.net They tell you about school quality with a score and census numbers on incomes and other aspects of demographics. We looked at numbers of students qualifying for school lunches. |

Rocky Point is a good call. Though you're probably closer to TWO hours from manhattan in RP.

You can be 10 miles from NYC (Manhattan) or even 50ft to the midtown tunnel and it could still take an hour or more lol. If that's your budget then maybe try Calverton (Walter?)
This is a Google RE search for homes under 300k in Calverton Google Search. Plus the further west you go the longer more hellish your husbands commute will be. Certainly at certain times even from Yaphank, you could get into mid-town in 90-120 minutes maybe less all depends. If it is for pleasure and not work a good option to go to NYC is pick a train station close by and has good run times to the city and drive to the station and take the train. Yaphank, itself is a pretty cool town... Last edited by BovinaCowHateWindTurbines; 05-02-2008 at 04:52 PM. Reason: grammers |

That's one helluva haul. Personally, I wouldn't want to be heading out east from NYC Thursday and Friday nights once summer has started. YIKES!

For those who may not be familiar with Calverton: Named in 1868 for Bernard J. Calvert, its first postmaster, Calverton is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the west part of the Town of Riverhead and partly in the east part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the central-east part of Suffolk County, along the Riverhead/Southampton and the Brookhaven/Southampton town line. Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Calverton partly in the Town of Riverhead and partly in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Wading River and the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow in the Town of Riverhead; on the east by the Hamlet of Riverhead in the Town of Riverhead and the Hamlet of Northampton in the Town of Southampton (the Brookhaven/Southampton town line); on the south by the Hamlet of Northampton in the Town of Southampton (the Riverhead/Southampton town line) and the Hamlet of Eastport in the Town of Brookhaven; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Manorville, the Hamlet of Yaphank and the Hamlet of Ridge in the Town of Brookhaven. ![]() The Hamlet of Calverton has a different border than does the "Calverton, NY 11933" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Calverton, NY 11933" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Calverton): places that have a "Calverton, NY 11933" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Calverton are in the Hamlet Wading River and the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow. For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

Holtsville, Medford, Ronkonkoma, Patchogue, Selden, and Centereach all have homes in that price range
