Hello everyone,
I am a 30 yr. old married woman with a 2 year old little girl. We are currently living in a lovely Brownstone in the West Village in NYC. We love it here, but we would like to move to a more "family" type community for our daughter. We are looking in CT., PA., NJ, RI, MASS, and Long Island and Westchester in NY. My husband is a surgeon, and I am a kindergarten teacher, so as long as there are good hospitals and schools nearby, we are not very limited on where we go. Now, for what we are looking for: - We would like to limit our search to Nassau County and Western Suffolk. We want to be close to the beach, we are big beach people. - A clean, safe neighborhood with a low crime rate and great public schools. - A fun place to raise kids. ie; a nice library, maybe a nice neighborhood pool, community events, nice parks - a fairly affluent community. We are not snooty people, but we would like to live in an upper middle to upper class neighborhood where people take good care of their homes and lawns, are well educated, and are involved in their community. Is there anything that would fit the bill? TIA! |

There is a lot that would fit the bill! Since you are big beach people, here are some choices based on that:
Sea Cliff in western Nassau is very nice and has a private community beach. Lido Beach, Long Beach, and Atlantic Beach are very nice, again in western Nassau. |

We love Long Beach! But we heard not to great things about the schools? Are there any good Catholic schools in the area? Same thing with Atlantic Beach, I heard Lawrence schools are only so-so. Such a shame, I would love to live there, it's beautiful.

Sorry I forgot about Lawrence schools. Might as well forget them nowadays, as a certain faction of religious folk WHO DO NOT SENT THEIR KIDS TO PUBLIC SCHOOL BUT TO RELIGIOUS SCHOOL got themselves elected onto the school board and are slashing the public school budget to save themselves on taxes while simultaneously using the public school budget as a treasure chest to pay for anything they can get away with related to sending their kids to religious school. The Lawrence school system is very big and there are many otherwise good towns that are affected by this. Well, my other choice Sea Cliff has a great public school system. |

We will miss having the world in our backyard, but for the kids, we want a more suburban lifestyle. As for Sea Cliff, I_Love_LI...thanks for the suggestion, I am going to look into it! ![]() |

Another place I love is Centerport in western Suffolk County. You might like that area too. |

Well-kept lawns and homes everywhere on LI. It's a staple of the place! Are you looking for ocean beaches? That would eliminate off the bat some of the areas on your list above. |

The upper-income Village of Lattingtown, Town of Oyster Bay is within easy commute of St. Francis Hospital in the Village of Flower Hill (Roslyn, NY P.O.), Town of North Hempstead.
For those who may not be familiar with Lattingtown: The Village of Lattingtown (incorporated in 1931) is in the north part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the north-central Nassau County. Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lattingtown in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Village of Bayville and the Village of Mill Neck; on the south by the Hamlet of Locust Valley; and, on the west by the City of Glen Cove. ![]() Lattingtown is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in community have the village name in their mailing address: places within the Village of Lattingtown have a "Glen Cove, NY 11542" and "Locust Valley, NY 11560" mailing address. For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

Thank you for all the suggestions! We will research these towns further and maybe drive through them as well. Does anyone know anything about Wantagh, Massapequa, Merrick, Port Washington, or Commack? How do these towns fit in with what we are looking for?
