Where were all these people when the cottage owners at West Meadow Beach got evicted? The Town of Brookhaven owned the land, and as a really big kick in the rear, the cottage owners had to pay into a fund to have their cottages razed!

It is pretty common for folks to say 'I own my home' but in reality, the bank owns it. I have never heard anyone say 'the bank owns my home', we all say 'Yes, I own my home'

I agree in principal, it would have been a great solution, if they could have bought the land. I have to agree with Iluvmycutie here, it is possible not all those folks had good credit and decent job.

IIRC the folks in FL tried to buy the land, but the developer was paying the owner much more than market value.

But they did pay their rents, which included taxes. I don't know if not paying your taxes is the best comparison to make.

It's just sad when the working class, mimimum wage earners don't have many options for housing on Long Island.

In the end, however, the land owner has every right to sell his/her property.

And, where exactly is there a community that does have options for minimum wage earner housing, such as single occupancy boarding houses?

With the exception of illegal aliens, in almost all cases, minimum wage earners are those young people just entering the work force, and these young people live with their families until they move higher up the income ladder and then can afford their own, independent living quarters.

Walter, I don't think you have your finger on the pulse of the working class. Minimum wage earners are not solely illegal immigrants or teens working at McDonalds.

If you have ever read NICKELED & DIMED in AMERICA , you would see that there are many many people in our rich country who lead marginalized lives because they are the invisible working poor .
If you shop in Walmart or if you eat at Applebees or Friendly's , you have probably spoken with these very people.

Nickeld and Dimed...ok, so should everyone in America be rich and live in Beverly Hills? I know this is not what you're saying, but I don't really know what to think.

There are more than enough people in America doing ok for themselves, don't you think?
