Queens chic. You might want to try Plainview. For that money, it will be tight though. You should get a 3 bedroom ranch...60 by 100. Schools are among the best. Commute door to door is about an hour (using Hicksville train). I live there and generally think it's a nice area for families.

For those who may not be familiar with Plainview:
Plainview is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-east part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Huntington town line and the Nassau/Suffolk county line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Plainview in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Syosset and the Hamlet of Woodbury; on the east by the Hamlet of Melville in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County (the Oyster Bay/Huntington town line and the Nassau/Suffolk county line); on the south by the Hamlet of Old Bethpage and the Hamlet of Bethpage; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Hicksville.
The Hamlet of Plainview has a different border than does the "Plainview, NY 11803" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Plainview and a place can be in the Hamlet of Plainview and have other than a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address): places with a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Plainview are in the Hamlet of Woodbury; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Plainview that have a "Old Bethpage, NY 11804" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

OP specified Nassau and an hour's commute. She will get neither in Northport (assuming commute is to NYC).
If you like the South Shore check Merrick as well. Lots might be a little smaller, but the commute is good and so are the schools.

I second this. Although you will need to go towards the higher end of your indicated price range.

You say you've been all over LI for months. Please let us know which communities you've seen already and are not interested in so we don't make unnecessary repeat suggestions.
"An hour or so commute" to WHERE? Midtown? In regards to the commuting issue, YOU CANNOT CONSIDER THE TIME IN THE LIRR SCHEDULE to be TOTAL COMMUTE TIME. For example, say you want an hour or less commute and somebody tells you "Huntington is perfect! 59 minutes!" Uh, not exactly. Time is needed to: drive to the station, find somewhere to park at the station, get on the platform, oftentimes trains are late (the aforementioned 59 minutes flat is only an estimate, trains are allowed to be counted as "on time" when they are up to 5 minutes late), getting off the platform and upstairs into Penn Station can take 5-10 minutes if it's crowded, then if you do not work right at Penn Station, you either have to walk/take a bus/take a subway to your office. In regards to LIRR parking lots, there are often permits that need to be bought and regulations as to where you can live if you are going to use a particular station. For example, to get a sticker to park at the Hicksville Station, you must live in the Town of Oyster Bay. If you don't, you can't park there so someone has to drop you off or you take a bus.
Another thing about the LIRR is that it has gotten VERY EXPENSIVE and the further away you live, the bigger your monthly ticket cost is. I live in Nassau in the CLOSEST zone and it is almost $200 a month. Look on the LIRR's webpage to see what the tickets cost in your target area. Some of the prices for monthly tickets from Suffolk could be a car payment! Plus if you have to take a bus or the subway on top of the LIRR, that is another $2.00 each way.
