Moving from Queens to Oceanside
Hello All,
I am in the early stages of selling my condo in Douglaston Queens and buying a house in Oceanside Long Island. I have a bunch of friends and some family living in LI...and I have always heard/read good details about Oceanside.
My only concern is that my girlfriend and I are both first generation citizens and come from diverse spanish/latin backgrounds...
Living in Queens of course is not a concern when it comes to diversity..but how is it for specifically Oceanside? The block I am looking at is nice and quiet with a mixture of young and old couples/families (from what I can tell they are Italian and Jewish on the block).
Will my girlfriend and I (and future children) run into any issues of being accepted?

I certainly hope not. I find it sad that anyone even has to ask that question.

I don't think so, the worst I can imagine is an ignorant comment or two but nothing serious. Nassau is becoming more diverse every day and aside from not having much of an Asian population, Oceanside isn't all that much different from Douglaston - demographically speaking.

For those who may not be familiar with Oceanside:
Oceanside is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oceanside in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Rockville Centre; on the east by the Hamlet of Baldwin and the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor; on the south by the Hamlet of Barnum Island; and, on the west by the Village of Hewlett Bay Park and the Village of East Rockaway.
The Hamlet of Oceanside has a different border than does the "Oceanside, NY 11572" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "Oceanside, NY 11572" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Oceanside and a place can be in the Hamlet of Oceanside and have other than an "Oceanside, NY 11572" mailing address): places in the Hamlet of Oceanside have a "Baldwin, NY 11510" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I wouldn't worry about it. These days most people are generally intelligent enough to judge people on their behavior, not their heritage, and as for those who are the opposite, you wouldn't want to associate with them anyway.

I don't think you'll have any problems at all. Oceanside is a nice community.

welcome!
I live in south Rockville Centre but half of my block is Oceanside and I do most of my shopping/socializing in Oceanside. I think it's a diverse community....even my own block has White, Jewish, Asian, Dominican, Italian, Irish, and Muslim. I don't think you should have any issues. If you do get any negative reactions, just remember not to judge the entire community on the actions of one or two jerks. Good luck and welcome to Oceanside!

I would like to ask a serious question...
Why do people:
1) Think ethnic diversity on LI is a good thing? Is there any proof of this?
2) Think that people that don't agree with them are ignorant jerks?
Please, do not respond with rage, I just want a civil answer if possible.
Thanks.

1)Diversity does broaden your spectrum of ideas, even if you do not agree with them...
2) Anyone who does not agree with me is just plain wrong....lol!

Ethnic diversity is a necessary and unavoidable thing. It seems to me that if there never was any ethnic diversity modern day man would not exist at all. Everyone came from someplace. Maybe we should all live with the original african tribe from which we each originated.
