We have been looking in Plainview but haven't found anything yet. Many of the homes that are new are on very small lots. One of the brokers suggested we look in Old Bethpage as they are in the same school district as Plainview and the lots are a little bigger.
Can anyone tell me about Old Bethpage? Pro and cons of living there. Are the demographics the same as Plainview? Anything you can share would be most helpful.
Old Bethpage is the same as plainview for the most part. Lots are a tad bigger, ob elementary isn’t as Asian as other schools. It’s irrelevant as once you hit middle and HS the schools merge.
Since you mentioned new homes. At those prices unless you must be in plainview schools, you mine as well go a mile down the road from old bethpage and buy a house on 1-2 acre lots in Melville area off round swamp and old country rd. Bigger homes, large lots way cheaper taxes.
We have been looking in melville too but haven't found anything. The prices there are expensive too and will need work for the same price. Unfortunately still not a great time to buy but great time for a seller.

It's not "cheaper" but you get a better value and lower taxes. Its a tough time to be a buyer. I have lived in both towns. You will probably be happy in Plainvew/Old Bethpage or Melville.
For that price range go a few miles east to Melville or Dix hills for larger lots and lower taxes and the Half hollow hills SD. Or go North towards Jericho turnpike to Woodbury and look in the Syosset SD.
The Old-Bethpage area off Round swamp road is beautiful, I love the tree lined streets, and the lots are a tad bigger than the ones in Plainview, but it will be more $$$
Also, Plainview-Old BP has a very increasing Asian population the past 5 years, if things like that factor into your decision.
We had been looking in Woodbury and parts of Syosset but that area also has a large growing Asian population so we decided to look elsewhere. I know that Plainview also does but it seems like that is mostly west of 135 and not as large as Syosset right now. It seems like everywhere on the north shore there is an increasing Asian population.
No matter where we go the prices are high and demand outpaces supply. We will just trying to expand our search as we haven't had much luck in Dix Hills/Melville.

Prejudice against Asians?
