As I posted earlier, "...(W)hile LIJ has a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address, it's actually in the Village of Lake Success (well, actually, most of LIJ is in the NYC Borough/NYS County of Queens, but the front door is in the Village of Lake Success)."
For those who may not be familiar with Lake Success: Lake Success is a village (incorporated in 1927) in the central-west part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau County/NYC border. Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lake Success in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of University Gardens, the Village of Russell Gardens, the Village of Thomaston and the Hamlet of Manhasset; on the east by the Hamlet of Manhasset, the Village of North Hills and the Hamlet of Manhasset Hills; on the south by the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park; and, on the west by New York City (the Nassau County/NYC line). ![]() Lake Success is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name as part of their mailing address: places in the Village of Lake Success have a "Great Neck, NY 11020" and "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address. For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

thanks everyone for your wonderful input. I've started to do research on these areas. Are there any great areas south of LIJ New Hyde Park? Majority of the advice I am getting (besides Garden City) is for the north of New Hyde Park.
Thanks Again! |

I live in the Herricks/Manhasset Hills area. My wife was a nurse at LIJ for over 15 years. Distance from home to LIJ is 2.5-3 miles or so. Time is 10+ minutes (with all the red lights along the way). The school districts are excellent. Shopping is closeby. Many little parks dotted all over. However, there is no 'downtown' walking area. Great Neck and Port Washington are the two closest towns with walking area and a quaint feel. If you live in Port Washington - it will take about 20-30 mins (with all the red lights). During peak travel, it may take 30-40 mins.
[Don't be fooled by looking at a map and thinking that a town is 'only' 5 or 10 miles away from LIJ. The red lights and the peak time traffic will kill your commute. However, many locals know of side roads that may shave time off your commute] Houses in Herricks/Manhasset Hills are kinda 'close' together and prices range from $550k (for small Cape) to $1mill plus for Splits etc. No fixer-uppers in this neighborhood. Construction companies usually buy the small Capes; demolish them and build a smaller version of a McMansion. Any fixing-upping was done in 2001-2006 during the boom. |

Living in the North New Hyde Park area, which is south of Union Turnpike but north of Hillside Avenue (Lakeville Road is the main thoroughfare) would put you in the Great Neck School district, one of the best on Long Island and in the country.
The houses are smaller and close together, but they are well kept up. Check out the area on the east side of Lakeville Road where the streets are lined with huge trees. My guess is the price range is 5-7 hundred thousand. Make sure you don't go east of Stewart Avenue or you'll be in Queens. |
