Greetings Everyone,
I will be moving very close to New Hyde Park later this year to work at LIJ hospital. I've spent some time driving around that area and unfortunately New Hyde Park doesnt impress me at all. Majority of what I have seen are tiny houses that are atleast 60 years old and no more then 10 feet apart. I also had a chance to drive around the north shore of nassau county and I must say that this is a very beautiful area. I need some recommendations. I would like to find nice neighborhoods WITH good school districts but not too far from Long Island Jewish hospital. There are many great places at north shore but that is about 25+ minutes of driving to get there. Is there anything closer to the hospital? Is there anything of interest east or south of LIJ hospital? I need to be very close to the hospital for emergency calls but I dont want to live in a so-so community. Please help! |

Please bear in mind that about 8 out of every 10 places with a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" ZIP Code mailing address (3,339 acres) are NOT in the Village of New Hyde Park (531 acres), and that, while LIJ has a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address, it's actually in the Village of Lake Success (well, actually, most of LIJ is in the NYC Borough/NYS County of Queens, but the front door is in the Village of Lake Success). For those who may not be familiar with New Hyde Park: New Hyde Park is a village (incorporated in 1927) partly in the southwest part of the Town of North Hempstead and partly in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County. What is your price range? We can't suggest anywhere without knowing price ranges.

That's #1, and...what makes an area "great" for you?

Hi Everyone,
My price range... I am hoping to find a place I can rennovate so ultimately I would like to end up spending no more then 1 million. I am hoping to keep below that (maybe 800k) but if need be I can stretch up to a million. As for what my definition of great town is... that is an excellent question. Tough one the more I think about it. I am hoping to find something with a little character. Nice location, solid schools, good neighborhood, doesnt have 7 cars per house (typical rental property), area is fairly clean and walkable. Houses look nice and you can tell that people take pride in their community. Perhaps something close to a park or a walking path for my 2 yr old daughter. Maybe I can reverse-answer this by telling you where I live and what I dont like about my current situation. I am in Yonkers right now. I live in a rental street; ton of cars on the street every day. Shady people I don't care for. Sometimes there is litter and because most people don't own their property, they dont respect the land. Houses here are small and often you find about 10 to 15 feet between each home. Schools here are mediocre at best. Cars are double parked all over the place and nobody has any respect or pride in their community. I am trying to get away from that. I have a two year old and I dont think that this is a good place for her to grow up in. Thanks for your help! |

New Hyde Park is kind of like Eastern Queens. Having gone to school at Adelphi University and had friends from NHP I've spent a fair amount of time in the area. When you're talking about the North Shore of LI though you are talking about $$$. I can't speak of housing prices there, but you can try looking up at Great Neck (which is actually quite a nice, quaint little town where nearly everything is walking distance). There's also Little Neck, but I think that's technically Queens.
Or you can go a little south of NHP and look at parts of Garden City (be careful of GC as there's a HUGE range of housing prices), Garden City South (more reasonably priced - relatively speaking) or Franklin Square (which may be a bit too far south for what you're looking for). |

Western end of Floral park off Atlantic ave....tree lined, good community feel
Garden City off New Hyde Park Road will get you in under 800K Garden City South east of Nassau Blvd will get you in way under 800K with bigger lots than NHP Stewart Manor nice village, try to find something on the 1 or 2 blocks zoned for Garden City school district Franklin Square if you can do 800K, there are better places than this |

Great Neck would be great distance wise. It's very Jewish, especially north of 25A, and has a decent Asian community as well; these might be pluses or minuses depending on your POV. Manhasset is more Christian and a little further but not much. You wouldn't get a mansion there, but you'd certainly get something very nice and the schools are top notch.
