My husband and I along with 18 month old twin boys are planning our move back to NY. We are in the process of deciding on a community. We'd like to find a town that offers Pre K / and an after "pre K " program.
We'd like to stay in Nassau and narrowed it down to Hewlett or Oceanside. We are looking forward to getting involved in the community (we are Catholic), and other activitites with the kids. Can anyone provide feedback on one or both towns (both postive or negative) Thanks in advance. |

The Hamlet of Hewlett is one of the upscale "5 Towns" (none of which are towns) that includes the Village of Lawrence, the Village of Cedarhurst, the Hamlet of Inwood and the Hamlet of Woodmere. The "5 Towns" has a large Jewish population, many of whom are Torah Observant Jews, unlike their secular brethren who reside in the Hamlet of Oceanside.
For those who may not be familiar with Hewlett: Hewlett is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County. Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Hamlet of Hewlett is bordered on the north by the Village of Valley Stream and the Village of Lynbrook; on the east by the Village of Lynbrook and the Village of East Rockaway; on the south by the Village of Hewlett Harbor, the Village of Hewlett Bay Park and the Hamlet of Woodmere; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Woodmere and the Village of Valley Stream. ![]() Hewlett is one of those many villages and hamlets were the majority of the places with the community name in their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have a "Hewlett, NY 11557" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hewlett are in the Village of Valley Stream, the Village of Hewlett Harbor, the Village of Hewlett Bay Park and the Village of Hewlett Neck; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hewlett that have a "Lynbrook, NY 11563" and "East Rockaway, NY 11518" mailing address. For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

Hewlett is not so Orthodox, though it may turn (as Cedarhurst is doing). Oceanside is mixed, but stable. There are Reform and Conservative shuls there and they still seem to be doing OK.
There are some non-Jews in Hewlett, but aside from Inwood the 5T is very, very Jewish. Hewlett-Woodmere SD hasn't had the problems Lawrence has, but I'd still be a little wary of moving there. |

The Hamlet of Oceanside is a more "diverse" community than is the Hamlet of Hewlett.
For those who may not be familiar with Oceanside: Oceanside is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County. Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oceanside in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Rockville Centre; on the east by the Hamlet of Baldwin and the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor; on the south by the Hamlet of Barnum Island; and, on the west by the Village of Hewlett Bay Park and the Village of East Rockaway. ![]() The Hamlet of Oceanside has a different border than does the "Oceanside, NY 11572" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "Oceanside, NY 11572" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Oceanside and a place can be in the Hamlet of Oceanside and have other than an "Oceanside, NY 11572" mailing address): there are places in the Hamlet of Oceanside that have a "Baldwin, NY 11510" mailing address. For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

We're in a similar situation and are considering Oceanside, too.
Catholic, too. I agree with the above poster about Hewlitt. Probably not for you. |
