Since starting this thread I converted last August. I got a Burnham Alpine Boiler 95% efficient. I also had a hot water heater installed. They removed the old tank also. Paid about $4400 after all was said and done. Already had a gas line in the house, (cooking). Single zone also.
National Grid supplied the boiler it was about $1000, hot water heater was about $900 and the rest was labor.
Gas heat is great. I don't even have to think about it. I got a programable thermostat and the boiler is quite as a mouse.
Every time my oil burner fired up it sounded like a jet taking off.
Hey Tom,
Could you tell me who you used for the conversion? You can send me a private message or on this board. Up to you. Thank you. I'm in Nassau county, Franklin Square. Thanks
Is it true that you can get a drastic price reduction if 5 people on your block convert from oil to gas? Has anyone else heard this?
I never heard of this but converting to gas is so worth it. I am doing that before the holidays. Already have it for hot water and stove. I am so excited to do it.
Correct me if Im wrong but isnt a ton of wood pellets around $200-250? If thats the case, it would be a great SUPPLEMENT to a oil fired system.
Check out "National Tool Co." on the web ,they sell a pellet unit that goe in a window like an AC.A bit pricy but its plug and play requires no special chimney or other equip. It should come down in price as time goes by.

This is what I was told by National Grid about a year ago:
If someone wants to convert from Oil to Natural Gas, the company will pay for the first 100 ft of piping to the house. Thereafter, the cost will be approx. $75-85/ft (probably subject to change).
In the case where there is no line near the individual house, if five or more residents convert to gas on that block/street, they will bear the cost to bring the line to the block/street.
Could be that the person I spoke to knew what they were talking about, but obviously I'm not guaranteeing it...
