Favorite Concerts in Long Island?
Everyone from Long Island knows that there's no better concert than a Billy Joel concert.... especially when he played at the Nassau Colliseum (although over the years his Garden shows were extraordinary too).
But what other Long Island concerts were your "favorites"?
Who played? Where was it? When was it?
I've seen alot of concerts over the years, but 3 stand out for me:
(in no particular order)
Van Halen - Jones Beach Theater- 1993 - Their "Right Here, Right Now" tour. Vince Neil (from Motley Crue) opened up and I'm pretty sure the stands were empty. At least from what I could see. I was still out in the parking lot with some friends until he got off stage. This was the 3rd of a 3 night set reports were that VH played a solid 2 hour set for the first 2 shows. It started to rain lightly as they started... Sammy shrugged his shoulders, said "We don't mind the rain if you don't". The crowd erupted. Eddie wailed on guitar and they went on for 3 hours. A GREAT performance.
Depeche Mode/OMD - Jones Beach Theater - 1988 - DM's "Music for the Masses" tour. It had rained on and off all day, but we went to the show anyway. I laughed my a$$ off when, during the opening act, the lead singer of OMD (famous for the song "If You Leave" from Pretty in Pink soundtrack) started dancing to "Tesla Girls" and slipped off the wet stage. Ok, not so funny looking back. This was my first Depeche Mode show and they were amazing. Saw them a few times since, but this was my favorite showing.
Def Leppard - Nassau Coliseum - 1988 - Their "Hysteria" tour was the one that featured the debut of their round stage. I've seen alot of concerts at Nassau Coliseum. They're usually set up at one end and unless you have good seats, it's hard to see. The round stage was set right in the middle and there were great views from everywhere. I remember them playing nearly every song from Hysteria and almost all of Pyromania (plus a few from On Through The Night & High 'n Dry). Added to that they rocked some covers (I recall ACDC's Back in Black). Just a great show.

The first concert I ever saw was Led Zeppeln at the Coloseum in 1973. Other highlights of my debauched childhood in the 70's:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Calderone Theater
Ian Hunter - My Fathers Place
Joan Jett - Malibu
David Bowie - Coloseum (we snuck in)
I could go on and on, but, frankly, I don't remember.

Any Jimmy Buffet concert at Jones Beach... even in the pouring rain. But the best for me was in 2005 when I was able to score backstage passes. If you have never been to the show you must plan for an all day event. Sometimes the tailgate parties are just as fun as the show itself.
Actually, any concert that I have been to at JB was enjoyable. It is just an awesome venue.
The worst concert on LI I was ever at was The Clash at Hofstra around 1985. The accoustics were terrible... It was a standing only crowd that was too hot & crowded. It had rained all day and the place was full of mud, too. Yuck.

I've actually never been to a concert in my life! However, I did get to see many incredible (and many terrible) punk rock bands in various crapholes throughout the island as a youth. I'll still go once or twice a year but always feel way too old and out of place, used to be a lot of fun though.

So long ago, but The Four Tops at the Mineola Theater along with the Temptations. There was a Four Seasons Concert at the Belmont Race Track and it was a record breaking number of people that showed. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long ago.

Also say Hootie and the Blowfish at Jones Beach....one of those perfect summer nights.
