I will be moving to Atlantic Beach in August and will need to commute to the City in Lower Manhattan. I heard the N33 to the A Train is the local transport. How long does it take, how much does it cost and how safe is the journey if you are travelling during normal business hours?

For those who may not be familiar with Atlantic Beach:

Atlantic Beach is a village (incorporated in 1962), on Long Beach Island, in the southwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County, adjacent to the Queens/Nassau County line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Atlantic Beach in the Town of Hempstead is located on Long Beach Island, and is bordered on the north by Reynolds Channel; on the east by the Hamlet of East Atlantic Beach; on the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean.

Atlantic Beach is one of the many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places that have the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places with an "Atlantic Beach, NY 11509" mailing address that are not in the Village of Atlantic Beach are in the Hamlet of East Atlantic Beach.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

You may want to check out taking the LIRR from the City of Long Beach
to the Flatbush Avenue terminal in the NYC Borough of Brooklyn, and then
the subway the 3 or 4 stops into lower part (the financial district) of the
NYC Borough of Manhattan.

There is also a LIRR Station in Far Rockaway & Inwood. More expensive than the subway but may save you a few minutes. It is, by far, a safer, more comfortable ride.
