For those who may not be familiar with West Sayville
For those who may not be familiar with West Sayville:
West Sayville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast part of the Town of Islip, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of West Sayville in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north and the east by the Hamlet of Sayville; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Oakdale.
The Hamlet of West Sayville has a different border than does the "West Sayville, NY 11796" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "West Sayville, NY 11796" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of West Sayville and a place can be in the Hamlet of West Sayville and have other than a "West Sayville, NY 11796" mailing address): places that have a "West Sayville, NY 11796" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of West Sayville are in the Hamlet of Oakdale and in the Hamlet of Sayville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of West Sayville that have an "Oakdale, NY 11769" and "Sayville, NY 11782" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

you can't go wrong with either area...both are beautiful...My taste would lead me more towards Sayville, downtown main street is very nice, you can walk to everything, nice shops, restaurants, etc... Good Luck

While there may be a west part of the Hamlet of Oakdale, there is no village nor hamlet named "West Oakdale" in the Town of Islip.

My sister lived in Sayville, just north of the LIRR. It was OK in that particular part of Sayville when she moved, but 10 years later, that part is looking a tad dumpy.
Oakdale and Sayville south of 27A (Montauk Hwy) are lovely; I don't particularly care for the areas sandwiched between Montauk and Sunrise Hwy (27).

The Hamlet of Bayport reportedly is the location of the Hardy Boys mystery series of books.

You will not have to be south of main street to find something nice in a good area. Sayville's main street wins hands down when it comes to main streets. As always its best to go out and do your own survey and see what suits you best.

From a quality of life standpoint: in Sayville, I would look south of Main St. Further north of Main St you're virtually on top of the LIRR; with the at grade crossings that LOUD horn won't be hard to miss.
Oakdale I'm not as familiar with; I believe there's commercial buildings and maybe an apartment complex near the Oakdale LIRR?

There is alot of ground between the railroad tracks and sunrise highway. And some very nice neighborhoods. And no I wouldnt suggest buying beside the train station tracks, but that goes for any town! The point is wherever you buy in Sayville, Oakdale , or Bayport you will not have to worry about crime, violence, etc. They are all very safe!

I live "sandwiched" between Montauk Hwy and Sunrise Hwy in Oakdale and it is a BEAUTIFUL, family friendly area. My only complaint is the cost-of-living on LI!
