with such a young child you have many great options. Baiting Hollow is mostly beautiful, very close to Riverhead, you could go a little further east to Jamesport or Mattituck, still be less than 30 minutes away & its really rural there, also great opportunities to be near the water but doubtfully for 2k.
I live in a town called Ridge-10 minutes from PMC on Lake Panamoka. Its a private lake community with very affordable homes & beautiful clean lake in the middle. You can swim, boat & fish in the lake & its only a short drive to the Long Island Sound.
Wading River is another beautiful place & there is a section called "wildwood acres/wildwood estates" that probably has great small homes for rent in your price range.
If you have more specific questions please ask. Riverhead is still undergoing a transformation but the hospital appears to be the best its ever been, my grandmother was just there for a few days.
Good Luck!

ETA-try craigslist & MLSLI.com for rentals

I live in Riverhead. You might be able to get water views or be right on the water for 2k in the Reeves Park section of Riverhead (don't quote me on that, though, and on the water your home won't be nearly as nice as not on the water at that price point). You can likely be on the water in Flanders for that price, but you might not want to live there.

Aquebogue is closer than any of the towns mentioned above and just as rural, depending on where exactly you are - and you'd be less than 5 minutes form work.

Honestly, you can't really go wrong unless you find a bad part of town, and you don't need to drive as far as some of the other suggestions: Calverton, Baiting Hollow, Wading River, Riverhead, Aquebogue, and Jamesport are all very close with very nice areas.

Real Estate:
Coldwell Banker Bagshaw Realty is in Riverhead
Prudential has a location nearby - in Mattituck, I believe, that handles the North Fork (Baiting Hollow and east of).

Ask more specific questions.

It's become a fantastic hospital. I don't know what your job title is, but I think you'll be very happy there.

Also, there is water all over the area (and much open- and farm-land), in places people who don't live here don't even realize, so if you call a broker ask specifically for those criteria you might really luck out. E.g., right in Riverhead is Merritt's Pond, which is a lovely little enclave, from which you can essentially walk to work.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Riverhead

It is important to know that there are 3 "Riverheads" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):

1. There is the Hamlet of Riverhead;

2. There is the "Riverhead, NY 11901" ZIP Code postal zone, and it includes the Hamlet of Riverhead and parts of other adjacent hamlets within its service area; and,

3. There is the Town of Riverhead, and it includes 7 hamlets as well as the "Riverhead, NY 11901" ZIP Code postal zone and other postal zones, within its borders.

For those who may not be familiar with Riverhead:

Riverhead is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Riverhead, in the northeast part of Suffolk County, along the Riverhead/Southampton town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Riverhead in the Town of Riverhead is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Northville and the Hamlet of Aquebogue; on the south by the Hamlet of Riverside in the Town of Southampton (the Riverhead/Southampton Town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Calverton and the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow.

The Hamlet of Riverhead has a different border than does the "Riverhead, NY 11901" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Riverhead, NY 11901" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Riverhead): places that have a "Riverhead, NY 11901" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Riverhead are in the Hamlet of Northampton, the Hamlet of Riverside and the Hamlet of Flanders in the Town of Southampton, as well as in the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow, the Hamlet of Northville and the Hamlet of Aquebogue in the Town of Riverhead.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
