...In the late 60's - early 70's....I use to life guard at Jones Beach over the summer months.... ...the greatest job in the world I thought...and the weekends were full of families...of all races...out to have fun at the beach.... ....but on my last visit...two years ago...the beach was full of roving punks...(groups of 2 to 5 or more)...roaming the beach... ...looking for someone to harrass....or pick on...unfortunately... ...the females are getting to be as bad or worse that the male groups....they usually start the poop...and then their man comes over to settle it....but as they say... I have been to Jones beach within the last two months and I have to say I did not see any roving punks or harnessed by anyone. I usually go to beach #6 to the boardwalk between 5-7pm for walks.
For the most part I see older people taking walks, families, and couples walking and enjoying the beach. I think Jones beach is a nice beach comparing to coney Island. Crime on Long Island is low comparing to many parts of the country..

Ehh...I think a guy who fantasizes about a near-future where oil supplies have dried up and people have no choice but to adopt not only the trades of the 19th century but also the period dress and Hollywood's version of "Old West" dialects, all under heavy religious overtones, might be a little too interesting for me.

Here's another interesting article I found posted on another city's forum. It's a long read, but worth it.
