It's true... there are many "under the table" deals that go on before a major service provider like Cablevision or FiOS can come into a town... That's why it's taking so long for FiOS to be available everywhere..... Verizon and the town officials have to cut all their deals before each town will allow them in.

They had a big 2-do at my condo complex about the service being available, and 9 months later they still haven't called me for an installation date..why? the TV still isn't available. Makes you wonder how good they will be with service considering how over their heads they are with installing.
As for cablevision, I hate them and can't wait to dump them. They're spending millions on advertising to discredit their competition, while they've raised rates and not improved service. I've had their techs to my place and they are always contractors. Considering how corrupt the TO Brookhaven is, it's not surprising that they're making it difficult for Verizon. So much for Republicans being about free markets and competition...not in Brookhaven!!
Stop sending pixelated crap to my TV!!

These town cable commisions are more trouble than their worth. But that being said, I still think Verizon is cherry-picking wealthier neighborhoods. They seem to roll out faster in places like "Head of the Harbor" versus Lindenhurst.
Cablevision has alot of $$ and bribes town officials, but so does Verizon, so why doesn't Verizon send out mailings to the people in these towns such as Brookhaven telling them how their town officials are blocking TV choice and to start complaining?
Verizon aint pushing hard in Brookhaven because like I said, they cherry pick wealthier neighborhoods (of which aren't many in Brookhaven town).
If I was Verizon and I wanted to install Fios I would be letting the people know who's blocking it. Bulk advertizing, billboards, maybe even radio commercials.
It's obvious Verizon doesn't want to bring Fios to "all of us" and only "some of us".
So I'm pissed with Cablevision, Verizon, and these town boards.
That being said as far as Westbury is concerned I was told otherwise by my neighbor who has connections with the village back in the summer.
Also if a contract was approved, I didn't see it in the list of contracts posted in the list on the Verizon TV forums at DSL · Cable · VOIP · Security · Satellite · Fiber · News · Tips · Reviews · Community · Tools - dslreports.com.
If the holdup is on Verizon's end I'm not suprised, they are notoriously slow with getting things done, like they say in the Cablevision "Working On It" ads.
It's a shame because Verizon's service is better. A pure fiber system will always be faster and better than some fiber + alot of coax.
I could go with Fios internet and phone and Direct TV, but I cant have a satellite dish and then I wont be able to get the TV until my contract would be done. Plus I like the Music Choice channels which Direct TV doesnt have (they have XM instead but they talk...I like no talk on music channels).

I don't buy the cherry picking idea....most people on Long Island I know have cable. It's not that expensive. Fios service costs about the same. I would bet that a majority of homes in a place like Lindenhurst have cable, so if they can afford cable, they can afford Fios.

Agreed, FiOS isnt "Cherry Picking" wealthier neighborhoods, heck I know for a fact they are wiring the Bronx. It is your local municipality that is trying to squeeze every buck out of VZ for the franchise agreement. In this economy expect it to take even longer. Wanna speed up the process? talk candidly to your town board and keep complaining. From experience, FiOS is certainly worth the wait. The phone is just as reliable as a traditional landline, the internet is just as fast as Opt, but oh my god the TV picture quality is stunning, much better than any satellite or CV. I Put those three on the same bill as my VZ cell phone, and verizon's got me hooked! Normally I wouldnt rave about a utility provider's product but I gotta admit, FiOS is damn good!

I'm going to call Westbury Village after the holidays and ask again, this time I'll get the name of who said it's been signed. I'll also confirm if its for TV as well as Phone and Internet. (It's possible then that providing TV is a seperate matter?) Crazy.

It's true, money talks, and everything else...walks.
In this instance, it's easy to be subscribing to various conspiracy theories, and it's easier to fall into, considering "the players"...especially, to a great degree, in the Town of Brookhaven, or ANY Long Island town, for that matter.
The theories out there are many....
"....CV is in cohoots w/ Brookhaven that is why no fios.(contract)...."
"the Dolans live in Brookhaven, SO, they don't want FIOS there..."
"....something about Brookhaven wanting them to invest in more infrastructure or something to that affect..."
"the all digital, February 2009 deadline has held it up"
"Cablevision roadblocks in Brookhaven, and ALL of Long Island"
However, I feel it has more to do with "how" the provider's ability to fulfill their promises or contracts, to the localities.
And NOW, with ALL of these BIG COMPANIES, you don't, literally, KNOW who is going to be solvent, one week to the next.
I feel that they make a committment to wire, and are not actually able to wire, on a schedule. They will only wire or speed up wiring, when subscriber interest is "there", and when it's not...they drag their feet, because, basically, they don't want to make an investment until the "return" has been illustrated with an actual "need".
ALSO, Verizon has been reluctant, in some instances, to "proceed" with ANY action, until it gets some kind of quid pro quo from local governments. So they ain't "angels" either !
This involves, public hearings, presentations, filings with local and state government agencies, such as the State Public Service Commission, handling legal challenges from other cable operators, and I'm sure, lots of CRAP !

And to add insult to injury Cablevision ceased operation of Voom as of 1/20 which resulted in the loss of a ton of HD channels.
And from what I've read, they are not going to replace them with comparable programming (so no "Chiller" for "Monsters HD"), just other premium HD channels (HBO Signature HD, HBO Family HD, HBO Comedy HD etc.).
God, I hate cablevision...
