Question Confused about Hicksville Schools?

Hi

I am thinking to shift to Hicksville from queens with my family and I have heard mixed views from people regarding the Schools. If any of you can please give me some advice and provide me with any information it will be appreciated. Also if you can tell me which part of Hicksville I should avoid getting a house since I dont have much knowledge about the area. Thank you and hope to be enlightened by some of your answers.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Hicksville

For those who may not be familiar with Hicksville:

Hicksville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east-central part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead/Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Jericho and the Hamlet of Syosset; on the east by the Hamlet of Plainview and the Hamlet of Bethpage; on the south by the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Salisbury in the Town of Hempstead and the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead/North Hempstead town line).

The Hamlet of Hicksville has a different border than does the "Hicksville, NY 11801" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and a place can be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and have other than a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address): places with a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hicksville are in the Hamlet of Jericho; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hicksville that have a "Bethpage, NY 11714", "Jericho, NY 11753" and "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

Hicksville Schools have taken a bit of a beating lately, but the residents moving in and buying (not renting) tend to put a value on education and push it on the upswing again. The area is becoming more diverse, but with the continuing influx of Indian, Pakistani, and other cultures that value family and education I think bodes well for the future of the schools (the Math teacher by us won an award for the Best Math teacher on Long Island in 2008). As with any new-to-america population, math scores usually take the lead over english scores for obvious reasons, and then start to even out. Great commute to the city. South is good, north is good. I'd stay away from houses close to the center of town.

I have 2 friends that teach at Hicksville High School. It is definately an average high school to above average. It is not bad by any means and the educational system is sound. There is a little bit of an element (illegals) that go to the school, but not many. The diversity of the town is changing towards more of an Indian/Pakistani culture. Both cultures value education which could only remain positive for the school. Perhaps people are mixed on Hicksville because of the cultural dynamic? I definately feel the school system is fine.

Have you gone down Broadway in Hicksville lately?? It seems every other store is being taken over by an Indian Store and they even put in an Indian Bank...

Hickville schools are mixed in my opnion, but they're improving, however in a few years Indians and Pakistanis will be the majority, so it might be uncomfortable living there if you are not part of one of those groups. The commute is fair, but they have a great shopping center. Based on what I know the north is the best part. Also, I'm not sure how safe Hicksville is, that is an aspect I would look into.
