We're hoping to move to Garden City or some other LI community from our neighborhood in Ozone Park/Howard Beach area. My 4th grade son is in the gifted and talented/Astre program. He tells me that he's being teased and excluded by some of his classmates because he doesn't use curse words. He says everyone in his class curses except him. In our local park we hear the teenagers using words I'm sure you can imagine quite liberally within each sentence. I'm just wondering if my kids are going to hear the same in playgrounds in GC or similar neighborhoods. Am I unreasonable to expect things to be different in other neighborhoods?
Chances are the potty mouth kids have potty mouthed parents.
My youngest is finishing 3rd, oldest is in HS. I never really heard them or their friends get potty mouthed. An occasional slip from an older child, yes, and the occasional, "Why can't I say ass if it is an animal" logic from the younger.
But cussing is a kids will be kids thing. I have heard some really awful stuff from HS girls! (The sex story I heard a HS girl tell at homecoming while sitting on the bleachers was enough to make a sailor blush.)
In my daughter's class (Catholic school), there is one kid ---- a pure kiss-butt angel in front of the teacher but, behind the teacher's back, he's used every curse word in the book and taught the other kids what "giving the finger" means. He was recently caught. He was using bad language and the teacher overheard him and he got reprimanded in the hallway.

My kids are young ; 8 & 9, but if they want to say the word stupid, they still ask me if they can say it.
I agree that they hear things on the tv, which is why we still control what they watch. Kids also hear things from their parents and then carry it over to their friends thinking its cool.

For those who may not be familiar with Garden City:
Garden City is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the center of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Village of Mineola and the Hamlet of Carle Place, all in the Town of North Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the south by the Village of Hempstead, the Hamlet of West Hempstead, the Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, on the west by the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of New Hyde Park.
Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places that have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address that are not in the Village of Garden City are in the Hamlet of East Garden City, the Hamlet of Garden City South, the Hamlet of Franklin Square and the Village of Stewart Manor; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address. (The Nassau County county seat is in that part of the Village of Garden City that has a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.)
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource
What's so bad about cursing anyway? This is a real question, I never understood what the big deal was. I think maybe 10, 15 years from now everyone will be dropping the F-bomb in front of their mothers, teachers, religious leaders, etc. and it'll just be cool. It was a big deal to show Elvis' hips on TV at one time, ya know.
Everyone I grew up with had a filthy mouth and I really have to watch myself sometimes, haha....when I have kids, oh geeze...that's gonna be tough!
I think you'll realize what's so wrong with cursing when you do have children. I had a terrible vocabulary myself, but did a 180 when our son came along. You want more for your children, and realize that giving them a proper vocabulary, and not subjecting them to profanity, gives them a better foundation. You'll also find that your child's friends will be very limited if parents hear curses flying out of your child's mouth.
Somehow I do not believe it will ever be acceptable to call someone a "c" word or to drop the F bomb in front of one's mother, grandmother, etc. Then again, I'll be older and could very well be a grandma. I'll have to get back to you on 6/15/2023.
I will admit to slipping in front of the kiddies and using the "poop" word.
It is funny that Elvis' hips were censored and now on broadcast TV we see simulated sex, hear multiple expressions for sex and various sexual innuendo, advertisements for condoms and sexual lubricants.
I tell my children "strong words, weak minds."
If a person can't articulate their views with the plethora of words available to us within the English language, said person is a dolt. A curse might have shock value, but it doesn't really do more as far as furthering any intelligent discourse.
I remember Jerry Seinfeld and Sinbad deliberately kept their comedy free of cursing. They said they thought a comic was a better comic if they were able to get the laugh without throwing curses at the audiences.
A side note: After studying abroad in England for a year, I was amazed at how the "C" word was commonly used.
