There are lots of black families in Baldwin. South by the harbor is nicer. Check the schools. My grandmother lived there until 2004, and I heard a lot of mixed things, including parents from Hempstead and Roosevelt trying to get their kids into the district illegally (they were viewed as a bad influence).
My only concern about Baldwin is that a lot of people there view it as "turning" (my grandma said every house sold on her block went to a black family) which is usually not good on LI. Mixed but stable is harder to find.

Are you interested in coming as far east as Riverhead Town? I posted to the other thread about mixed-race couples. If you'd like to look into it, just ask some questions. We're very happy living here.

I lived in Selden a while back. The Centereach, Selden, Ridge area was pretty much mixed, although certain parts of Ridge were pretty bad. Watch that one.

How come most of the areas that are listed as places to ABSOLUTELY STAY AWAY FROM in other threads are suggested to an African American family here?

Baldwin, Valley Stream, Elmont, Shirley, Mastic, Amityville....really all of them. Even somewhat upscale places like Malverne or Wheatley Heights typically get trashed on here.
BTW: It's not my opinion at all that these are places to "stay away from".

I am from medford also. I have to agree, we have all kinds here(although it is predominately white). I see my daughter in the high school with all her diff race friends, and they seem to get along fine.

I only know a few of the areas you listed. I wonder if some people recommend staying away from areas simply because they have sizable minority populations or because they only know certain neighborhoods (many communities have both nice and not so nice neighborhoods).
I don't know Malverne and Wheatley Heights but if they are upscale, why would they be trashed?

There are absolutely breathtaking streets in Freeport along Brookside avenue. Afluent African American People live in these beautiful homes.
