Mixed couple in Kings Park, advice please.
Hi, I'm thinking of buying for around 300 in Kings Park. I see good reports on the town, but I have questions. I heard Smithtown was not accepting of b/w couples, since it's close, how about KP? Would we have problems? I believe the taxes might be high, but under disability we may be eligible for a reduction. I know there is no "downtown" per se. Is it nice there? What is the prominent ethnicity of the whites? We are a middle-class married b/w couple with no children, so the school districts don't matter. I would truly appreciate any information on these issues, as we just want to be safe. Thanks so much.

I wouldn't go to Kings Park. You would be happier in Dix Hills or Wheatley Heights for many of the same reasons I posted on another post about Middle Class African-American neighborhoods.
However, your price range may limit your choices. Have you considered moving further east into the Middle Country, Sachem or Longwood school districts. Check out these towns" Selden, Centereach, Ronkonkoma, Lake Ronkonkoma, Coram, Ridge, Middle Island,
Holbrook, and Holtsville.

If you have children or plan to, you may be better off in Dix Hills. Parts of Wheatley Heights are in the Wyandanch school district (BAD!!!) and parts are in the Half Hollow Hills school district (GOOD!!) There has been talk the past several years about making all of Wheatley Heights part of Wyandanch school district since it is, in all reality, North Wyandanch and has the same zip code.
North Babylon is a nice, diverse area, too, as is Deer Park.

The original poster said they don't have children.
Come on out to the Riverhead area - perfect for you! Particularly since you're unconcerned about schools (though I am warming up to some of our schools). It's pretty, laid back, there are downtowns; and ethnically it's largely white, black, and Hispanic. Of the very few people I've met since having a child, two pair of parents are mixed race black/white.
We're a mixed race family as well, through adoption.
A few of the hamlets in Riverhead Town are more black, more white, or more mixed than others. Some have "better" areas than others; some have "worse" areas than others. If you're interested in coming this far east, ask some questions and maybe I can help out.

Well I have lived in Kings Park for almost 15 years and we love it. $300,000 is a low number for the area but there are some old homes in town and some small homes in San Remo that might go in the low $300's.
I do not know how to answer the race issue. I would say that you would be more accepted in Kings Park than Smithtown, but I do not think you would have an issue in Smithtown either.
Kings Park is mostly white and is very safe. Many residents are police, teachers and nurses. Super safe area.
There is a downtown but nothing to really speak about. Its off the beaten track alittle and we like it that way. Big perk is being surrounded on 2 sides by water.
Good luck!

I don't think you would have any problems in Kings Park. Although it is a largely white area, I don't think that you would feel discriminated against.

Looking at a few maps I don't think there are any areas in Wheatley Heights that are in the Wyandanch school district.

The truth is that a mixed couple is going to get looks from people anywhere they go. If you're worried about your physical safety, I don't think it is going to be an issue at all. Are there other towns that may have more blended families? Yes. Does that mean you should move to them? That is a personal decision you need to make. I'm part of a blended family and live in a very white school district. We've been made to feel very welcomed here. I stopped looking to see if people were staring at us a long time ago. I'm too busy chasing my children and making sure I'm on top of all of their activities. Best of luck to you!

It always saddens me when people have to ask other people where they should live because of their race. There are closed-minded idiots everywhere, live where YOU want to live and don't take no for an answer. That's the only way things are going to change.
Yes we can!
