Two areas we are considering buying a home in look very different when it comes to the crime stats

Floral Park:
Violent Crime = 1
Property Crime = 2

Oyster Bay:
Violent Crime = 3
Property Crime = 5

(Scale from 1 to 10. Lower is better. Numbers last updated on 10/07)

Is that Website accurate? Can anyone account for these numbers? I was honestly surprised at the Oyster Bay crime, as I've only heard wonderful things from folks who live there...

Check out the FBI website...they have all the info.

Oyster Bay: There is a small area by the railroad that is not very nice and some Section 8 housing that has issues. IMO its very safe.......we loved living there.

Most of Oyster Bay is nice except for the barrio by the train station.
Still the park there is nice, must've been scary as heck though in a storm.

Floral Park has very low crime stats, mainly due to the incorporated status and village police who are quick to respond and go on frequent patrols.

I don't know too much about Oyster Bay but I don't believe they have village police (do they?). I also know there are some shady areas in OB that I can see would clearly have higher crime stats for sure.

Are the crime statistics you cite for the Village of Floral Park and the Hamlet of Oyster Bay or for the non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones that "share" these communities' names?

The Village of Floral Park is 903 acres while the "Floral Park, NY 11001" ZIP Code postal zone is 1,285 acres.

Places with a "Floral Park, NY 11001" mailing address that are not in the Village of Floral Park are in the Village of South Floral Park, the Village of Bellerose, the Hamlet of Bellerose Terrace and the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park.

The Hamlet of Oyster Bay is 763 acres while the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" ZIP Code postal zone is 7,002 acres.

Places with an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay are in the Village of Centre Island, the Village of Cove Neck, the Village of Oyster Bay Cove, the Village of Laurel Hollow, the Hamlet of East Norwich, the Village of Muttontown, the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck.
