You are right, of course, Walter; however, as a Realtor, I personally happen to know the boundaries well and was indeed referring to "Huntington Station" only, not the mailing address in general.

11746 also covers Dix Hills.

Tom, as I understand it, "Dix Hills, NY 11746" is a postal branch of the "Huntington, NY 11746" post office, and has a different border than the "Huntington, NY 11746" ZIP Code postal zone; but, unlike, "Plainview, NY 11803" which is a postal branch of the "Hicksville, NY 11801" post office and has a different "ZIP Code" in addition to a different border, "Dix Hills, NY 11746" does not, and I do not know why. Anybody?

No idea why--but it's part of the Huntington Station post office (11746) and not Huntington (11743). You'd have to ask the post office why they stuck Dix Hills in with Huntington Station. It's a huge post office, by the way, and packages for Melville (11747) are handled at Huntington Station. Dix Hills doesn't have a separate post office, AFAIK.

Yes, AlexisT, blaming it on my typing faster than I was thinking, which I keep reminding myself not to do, I mistakenly omitted "Station" between "Huntington" and "NY, 11746", and my immediate prior comment should have been:

I live in Woodbury, which is the town over to the west from Huntington (Station & West Hills). I'm in downtown Huntington (Huntington Village) every once in a while, most of it is awesome and safe. There's lots of shopping, bars and restaurants. Likewise, West Hills and around the Walt Whitman mall are pretty nice areas.

Huntington Station, however, doesn't seem like such a great area. Try walking down New York Avenue south of the train station at 10:00 at night and you'll see what I mean. At the Taco Bell just north of Jericho Tpke, there are always cars idling in the parking lot with people standing around. If you're going to be in that area after dark, try to stay with other people, or in your car (going fast, heh).

As far as gangs go, I wouldn't know much about that. There is a Zulu chapter in Huntington Station and there probably are Latin Kings, crips and MS-13.

Not all areas in Huntington Station are bad, though, just like not all areas in downtown Huntington are safe. To be honest, you should always be at least a little bit cautious wherever you are.

nyproduct is on a distinguished road
You mean to tell me that some people are actually getting out of their cars to eat their tacos? That is insane! They should get back inside and and turn up the A/C and enjoy their food like the rest of us. Come on. What's wrong with standing around in a fast food parking lot eating the food you just bought? Let's not get crazy. I was born and raised in Huntington Station a mere stones throw from the Taco Bell mentioned in the previous post. It happens to be a great part of town.

Because the people hanging around in the parking lot at night never go inside Taco Bell and buy anything

There is a large gang element in Huntington Station. Ask any local cop.

Huntington Station is not just New York Avenue and the train station!!!
Yes, the area immediately surrounding the RR station is not the best (neither is it in many towns!) The town is trying to improve that with a revitalization program; however, illegal aliens don't help matters...

At the same time, there are MANY very nice areas in HS - I moved there from Cold Spring Harbor and wouldn't have done so if I agreed with all the bashing. The neighborhoods can be more diverse than in CSH, but wouldn't that be partly for economic reasons?

As far as "people" congregating outside establishments, there are numerous towns/areas on L.I. where fast food/convenience stores turn into hang-outs, i.e. 7-11s, etc. Knowing what areas to avoid is important no matter where you are, HS is no exception.

Can you guess you hit a nerve ?
