I don't see whats so bad about New York Avenue through Huntington Station. It looks like a hundred other parts of LI. It's definitely not the Miracle Mile or 7th Avenue in Garden City, but in my thousands of trips through this section of Route 110 I've never managed to come across whatever "terrifying element" it is that has everyone else so shook up.

Walt Whitman I've heard is a top notch school even though there is some gangs and rif-raf in the district.

I'm in contract on a home in Huntington Station - right off New York Avenue - the supposed hell hole street that some on this board make it out to be. I read some posts on this board about the area and I was freaking out. My husband and I went and drive around Huntington Station ( yes, even the "bad" parts), walked around, ate at the dreaded Taco bell, talked to neighbors - and no one said they feared for their lives. We even stopped a Suffolk Co. cop and he was more than happy to answer questions and shoot the breeze with my NYPD husband. My guess is that because you see stores and eateries catering to a different population segment than you , you assume it is bad and that you need to speed down the street and not stop at red lights. Perhaps it's because I'm moving from Manhattan/ Brooklyn to Long Island and have a bit of different take on crime and don't jump to conclusions because people are standing outside in a Taco Bell parking lot ( HELLO TEEN SOCIAL LIFE IN THE 50'S AND 60'S REVOLVED AROUND KIDS IDLING AT FAST FOOD JOINTS AND ROOT BEER STANDS)! Am I nervous about the train station? YES...BUT THAT GOES FOR *ANY* TRAIN STATION ( Manhattan, Brooklyn, wherever) AT A CERTAIN HOUR...public transit just tends to cultivate crime directly around it ( hello have you ever been to the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street???) . I've looked at the crime statistics of this area and you know what...worse crime happens in my Brooklyn neighborhood - and I live in an "ITALIAN"/wealthy/upper middle class neighborhood....Ha! The town is working to deal with the illegal immigrant and gang population. The fact is....the crime seems to be gang on gang crime...so if you happen to be a gang member I would be concerned...otherwise reap the rewards of what Huntington Station has to offer.

Good point.
If youre coming from Bklyn then maybe Huntington Station is Mayberry but if youre coming from LI, stuff like Latin Kings and MS 13 may be cause for pause.
Good luck and congratulations.
Check back with us from time to time, let us know how youre making out.
It sounds like it may be on the rebound.

Congratulations and welcome to my neighborhood!
As I've stated before, there are many very nice areas in HS--I happen to have found one myself when I downsized.
If you have any questions/concerns, just ask - you'll get an answer from someone who lives there

Let me know how we are making out? We will make out just fine I can advise in advance. Mayberry? I wouldn't call it Mayberry...but I do think I have a different perspective than those who have long lived in suburbia. I'm not a white suburban isolationist and I am used to different cultures at this point ( some I am more appreciative of than others....seeing women walk down my street in burkas has not quite been something I have been able to wrap my head around but whatever). Check crime statistics on the residential areas of Huntington Station- away from Depot Road/train station...and you will not find much. Have you ever driven in the residential area - Presidential section, etc. to know what you are talking about? Most of the residents in this area have been there for years...and the homes that were bought by what you deem as "undesirables" are now being snatched up by younger married couples such as myself - as advised by a few real estate agents and residents recently ( I'm sure Elke will back me up on this one).

My grandmother's house is off Lenox Road south of Jericho Tpk. It is a very nice area and has changed very little since I grew up. The really bad area has always been 110 from the Big H up towards the Walt Whitman mall and at least since I was a kid it has gotten worse, especially south of the RR station where it has become a full-on barrio. I will say I had more sketchy experiences at night at that train station then I ever had in NYC, but that never stopped me from taking that train for years.
There are some working-class neighborhoods around the RR station but I don't think they are really bad inasmuch as somewhat run-down. I am not sure about the neighborhoods immediately around those roads but I do know if you go 5 minutes away it can be very nice. I know a lot of the houses on or near the main roads are chopped up into apartments, I would probably want to avoid those.
